To me, "supported your country's authority" means that you consider it legitimate that your country can exert coertion on you (coertion in general, you can disagree with the particulars, such as the fantastic patriot act). It means that you accept to pay taxes to your country, and that police and public coercion is your country's job.Originally posted by GePap

It is also acknowledging the legitimacy of your country's authorities, even when you disagree with them. I may hate Chirac, I must acknowledge this guy is my legitimate president. I know Bush has lost the election, but you can still believe in the legitimacy of your authorities if you think such a coup won't happen again.

being a patriot doesn't mean blindly following your leaders.
it means doing your duty as a citizen, and keeping a tight rein on them.
it's a given you get behind your president when it's your national security at risk; it's not like you have a choice between him and yosemite sam.
that said, you can still criticize him/her. you can still protest. you can still exercise all the rights you have.
those who were protesting against the war are just as much patriots as those who were supporting bush in the war.

I'm a patriot who regularly exercises the right to question my leaders and their policies at all times. Blind devotion is extremely dangerous, and should be thoroughly discouraged.
I love my country. I distrust my government. I will fight for change in my country because I love it. I would put my life on the line to help my country (a la Septemer 11th). I will not fight wars that are fought without a just cause towards the health and safety of my country (a la Iraq).
