Democrat denounces 'denigrating a sister state'

JACKSON, Mississippi (AP) -- Texas Gov. Rick Perry is known for his fondness for cowboy boots. But he might be reminded not to step on toes.

"I don't want to become Mississippi," Perry recently told The Dallas Morning News, citing the state's problems with transportation, economic development and education. The comment prompted an invitation that was more diplomatic barb than Southern hospitality.

"We elected officials in Mississippi are of the opinion that denigrating a sister state is not statesmanlike conduct," Mississippi House Speaker Tim Ford told Perry in a two-page letter. "I invite you to come visit us to learn more about Mississippi."

Ford, a Democrat, told the Republican governor he didn't want to launch "an achievement contest," but mentioned a $1.5 billion Nissan plant opening this year in Mississippi and said state lawmakers are working on a comprehensive education package.

Perry spokeswoman Kathy Walt said the governor had not received a copy of Ford's letter.

"His comments certainly were not meant to cast any bad light on the state or its citizens," Walt said. "His father-in-law is a Mississippi native."

Ford forwarded copies of the letter to reporters and several public officials, including the U.S. senators from both states and a former Texas governor -- President Bush.

In any case I have lived in Mississippi. It wasn't too bad, just poor. I drove though Texas, I wasn't impressed. I got a motel room and it was filled with dead bugs. So that doesn't bode well for Texas.

I say banana. Both states suck.

Kudzu is great for coverup (litterally) masacres and atrocities. I suprised that it has not retreated some in recent years, since a market for its roots was discoverd some 10 years ago. The Nipponeese consider the roots a delicacy.

My threads were anti-Southern when I presented knowledge of racism in the Northern states?

And mind you, even with a minority of Southerners owning slavery, the Southern economy in antebellum America was dependent on the cash crop economy, which in turn, relied on the system of slavery.

I guess you have not read the posts where I have discussed examples of racism in the Northern states, or, you have a reading disability.

You can insult whoever started a thread that you find insulting to you, but don't drag an entire group of people into it with a bigoted, slanderous word.

I'll grant you my state is also a wasteland. But Texas is no better.

Like I said I lived in Mississippi. Just because you have more money doesn't make you better. Everyone thumbs their noses at Mississippi, I figure I have to defend them.

You have a massive anti-Southern bias, MrFun, don't even play like you don't. Just because you allow that things are bad doesn't mean you don't miss a chance to bash the South.

Bunnygrrl, a native Chicagoan, pointed out to me ten years ago how prevalent anti-Southern biases are in the North. You are a prime example of it.

None of which excuses Sloww's comment.
