multiplayer connection problems

Ok, i've been trying to play with a friend of mine online today. . we both connected to the same server and stuff. . problem is, we play for a while, and i keep loosing my connection. . what could it be?. .
is there a way where i can just connect directly to his computer? if there is, would that solve the problem???
