Question Solutions wanted to the "Other Half" problem with Civ3

(Apologies in advance but that Lost Hours review got me thinking)

Having the "benefit" of not getting Civ3 yet , being in the UK, I am after some suggestions in advance about how to cope with "Civ Widow syndrome" soon to be experienced by my significant other.

I'm highly concerned because last time with Civ2 she had friends in a similar position who formed a "Civ Widows" support group but now they've all moved - guess one person who is glad there is no MP in Civ3

I've started weaning her off seeing me in the evening by spending ever increasing amount of time on Apolyton but its not the same life devouring monster that is Civ.

So any ideas about how to resolve this tricky issue ?

Please don't suggest convincing her to have a go at Civ3. Its a doubly bad idea - apart from Tetris and "It came from the Desert" on the Amiga she believes all computer games are "silly", although she can see the appeal of Civ (after all she has a weakness for playing the Minoans in Civ the board game) and much more importantly we only have one PC capable of running Civ3

    Answer: get a life

    or

Get some counselling (that solves almost anything)

I have a life (honest) I'm just worried that it might get in the way of my quality Civ3 time

Anyway I thought having a life and being a Civ'er enough to post on Apolyton were mutually exclusive?

If she really loves you, she won't mind you playing some Civ

Just buy her lots of chocolate and...um...well I don't want to reinforce any gender stereotypes so I'll stop right there

If my wife ever stops playing Diablo, she might notice me playing Civ3 - which could be a problem, 'cos she's gonna want to play it too...

Um, what I am about to say is tantamount to blasphemy around here, but, here goes:

Your significant other is more important than Civ3.

    There, I said it. Bye.

In the game lots of luxuries can be used to quiet unhappy citizens. That same strategy may work with your wife

Yes, but what about if your girlfriend spends all HER time on games (counterstrike in this case) , so she won't even respond on ICQ ?
Maybe put your girlfriends picture in place of the Joan of Arc leader of the french, then she won't get jealous and know you'll always be with her.. aww romantic

In all seriousness this can be a problem. I don't play Civ III (because I didn't like it, not the wife), but SMAC, Civ II and Apolyton have created some friction.

The only solutions I found are to try and play while she is doing something else and to find out what you better not miss. Planning ahead for serious Civ time is also good.

    Good luck!

In reality as long as I play in the evenings after the kids are in bed everything is fine on the domestic front

Actually my top tip is to get a comfy chair with a good light in your Civ room, then the other half can read etc., whilst you bask in the glory of your mighty civ. This at least gets round the "I didn't see you at all last night" syndrome.

    Thanks for the suggestions though

Of much more real concern is work!

When Civ2 was at it height work was a 20 minute cycle ride away so I could still get a few hours kip after a 4am finish now its a 90 minute drive away

    Wink

Well the answer is quite obvious. Buy another computer and get your wife hooked too
