  • Some tips for a beginner

Hey folks, I could kind of do with some help with CTP2

I'm an experienced Civ 1 & 2 player, but had never played any CTP until recently.

First, a couple of questions regarding the game. (I'm running the apolyton pack).

    1. At the beginning of the game I often get several warnings regarding global warming. Why is this?

    2. The maps tend to have huge areas of terrain such as deserts, mountains and snowy areas; the amount of terrain suitable for farming often makes up only around 20% of the land mass. Is there something wrong, or is this just a feature of the game?

    3. After Civ 2, my instincts are just to build farms and mines (and roads of course). Do I need to bother with other trade creating tiles?

    4. My instinct is to not use specialists, as they reduce the efficiency (other than entertainers when I have to). Should I use specialist reguarlly?

    Cheers

    1. There is something wrong with it.

2.How are the maps set ups in the single player starting screen

    3. More commerce more science. They really are needed. yet i only build them in forests, swamps and trunda.

    4. When my cities are smalls i set farmes at maximum so they can grow to a good size. When they become too big i try to set the smallest amount of growth without letting the city starve. other than that to compesate some disavantages like when the city has negative gold. Or to reach a more advanced civ.

      1. some where in your userprofile.txt file it says maxplayers. It should be set to 0. if it's not it gives the message. I know I saw the solution somewhere maybe medmod beta or medmod something. These post are pretty far back so you have to search for them.
      2. I think there's something wrong deserts appear when you set the terrain too dry, but they are farmable. Snowy areas show up when it's to cold, and well I don't know what controls the mountains. So, next time set the map editor features wetter and hotter.
      3. The commerce improvements are neccessary, in the modern age science gets to 10,000 per advance and in the later ages it goes to 40-120 thousand so you really need them. Also as your cities get bigger they lose science because of production. The AI doesn't build commerce improvements though, but they have cheats in diffdb.txt to help them, but they don't seem to work to well. try terraforming.
hint: your coastal cities should become your science cities so try to build as many ports as you can.
      4. I also rarely use specialist except when I need them, and I seem to do pretty well. in the modern age and beyond try to have 3 or so scientist in your large production cities, and use merchants.

It really gives a good visual and effectitiveness to make a line of ports through the beachs and another line of drilling plataforms in shallow waters. Production and gold in its way .

Just play the game through to get used to it and get the feel of it. depending on what type of victory u like or the kind of things u "like to go for", changes ur stratagy.
Rmns 6:23 "For the wages of sin is death, but the gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord." John 3:16 "For God so loved so world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever beleives in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." KJV

Thank you all. I'm doing a lot better now, and starting to thrash the computer. (Well, until I became a technocracy and half of my cities revolted...)

Beware, before too long I'll be annihilating you lot on the multiplayer games...
