  • Tukish Military Does What The Turkish Military Does Best?

Twitter lighting up with rumors of a coup.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Erdogan might overstayed his welcome with the Turks. If this coup happens we need to see the motives. It is possible the military is upset about the inaction on Erdogan's part with Daesh.

Do I welcome a coup? I am not sure. Erdogan has been wholly incompetent however.
For there is [another] kind of violence, slower but just as deadly, destructive as the shot or the bomb in the night. This is the violence of institutions -- indifference, inaction, and decay. This is the violence that afflicts the poor, that poisons relations between men because their skin has different colors. - Bobby Kennedy (Mindless Menance of Violence)

Hard to be happy about a coup normally, but it really does seem to be standard practice for the military to defend the ideals of Ataturk.

The Turkish military has said it has taken total control. I am uncertain what this means. For themselves? Is Erdogan finally gone?

And the Brexiteers were worried Turkey would join the EU.

It looks as if the coup was successful.

Well, Erdogan was increasingly dictatorial, so it looks like whichever side one roots for, one is rooting against democracy and rule of law. Yay.

Whoever wins needs to win hard. A civil war will turn the country into a migrant (and terrorist) superhighway right into Europe. Greece sure as hell isn't in any shape to stem the flow.

I don't think this will last long. The entire military apparently turned on the government. Erdogan tried hard to purge the military of secularists, but perhaps some invited themselves back in.

Erdogan is still at large, people are taking to the streets to protest the coup. Despite (or due to) being a power-hungry populist, he's quite popular even in Istanbul.

Hopefully it is too late for Erdogans government. People need to see pass the populism. The military may be searching for him now.
