  • How desperate for customers is Bank of America?

I just got an offer to give me 300$ simply for opening a checking account and receiving 4000$ direct deposit.

With about an hour's work I can open the account, move my direct deposit over, wait two weeks to be paid once, switch my direct deposit back over, wait for my 300$ and then close the BofA account

    Hah.

    Goldman's had a similar offer.

It might be one of those traps like AOL where you discover that they won't let you close your account

        Please do it.

I opened a BoA in MD. I set my address to OR when I spent 2 months there between postdocs. I never entered a BoA in OR, although my mom did a couple of times to deposit into my account.

Recently I received information about them selling their banks in OR to another bank. No problem, I thought, my account was open in MD. My account people in IL told me no problem.

I got told my account was changing.

I went and tried to change my address. They told me there was some problem with my address. This could make sense, as when I am in the US I live on site at Fermilab. I had problems with the DMV and numerous other places.

I try again, told the same thing.

This is over some time, as I am only in the US occasionally.

Finally I am told that the accounts are switching over the next weekend. Also, I need access to the ability to write checks and make deposits over the weekend.

I tell my account specialist, new one, they recommend making a new account. I expect problems with the address. No problems.

Now I have an account in OR that I have difficulty doing anything with, and the new account in IL with BoA.

And this has cost me over 100 USD because I had some Student Loan accounts that were switched to another company years ago (5?) yes continued to automatically debit. So I didn't realize that I needed to change them over because they didn't really communicate with me until after they had changed the bank a couple of times and had been told there was no money. This isn't a problem with the student loans, but is a problem with the new bank in OR because they charged me a 35 USD fee every time someone tried to draw from the old BoA account and there wasn't enough money in the account.

So screw BoA, take their money.

Wells Fargo are dickheads. They'll screw you anyway they can. Fees for everything, always changing terms of service on their accounts with new fees for different irrelevancies. They'll break your automatic transfers and then charge you fees for not having an automatic transfer, and then pile on overdraft fees if the fees for their **** up put you over the limit. They won't apologize for their mistake or withdraw the fees or even fix the broken automatic transfer ... So they can continue to charge the fees for the automatic transfer not going through each month.

BPI on the other hand have always been decent and helpful.

I don't know if they suck more/less than other banks in the US. I only have an account with WF because my old First Security accounts became WF accounts and there were literally no other banks in the town(s) I lived in most of my life. They have definitely been getting worse and worse over time.
