I was waiting to cross the big square (me and a bazzilion other pedestrians) in rome for a good 10 minutes.
Noone car stopped and there were many cars.

Some courageous soul with a desperate abandon just started walking in the traffic.
We and some other suiciders following him ASAP and pretty soon there was a crowd stopping cars with the " I want it so"

It was great. Like the ten thousands.

So you're one of those people who take the exit too slow? That's what exit ramps are for!

Actually I think you living in Texas is one of the few things you havent lied about. Your backstory about why and how you moved there of course are a whole different story.

Roads are quite different here, we don't tend to have as many big roads with exit ramps especially in the heart of cities (London and Paris are a bit different though). It's not about going too slow though, the French will literally beep at anything just because they feel like it. It's actually a traffic offense in the UK to use your horn improperly.

It is also in France (http://www.legipermis.com/infraction...on-amende.html). As in almost all countries.
Problems are the definition of "improperly" and the willingness to enforce the law.

I'm guessing the willingness to enfore the law is the issue here then. In the UK the definition of improperly has never seemed to be a problem.

Too be fair I would get frustrated too if I had an inferior highway system.

Worthless anecdote: when I was in Egypt yrs ago I talked to a bus driver, who told me his company sent a delegation to Germany to buy new busses. They were close to strike a deal, but had a major prob that the horns were not loud enough, so those had to be changed extra for them

Here if you aren't almost constantly using your horn and paying attention to other people's horns you're probably going to die or kill someone ...

Honk: "I see you, do you see me?"
H-Honk: "I know you're probably slowing down for a left turn, but I'm passing you so just wait"
                      H-H-H-H-H-Honk: "Whatever it is you're doing ... just don't ... ok?"
HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONNNNNNNNNNNNNKKKKKKKKK: "I'm passing someone on a blind curve on a hill ... you might want to reconsider driving on roads today"

Most European cities have excellent public transport systems which means that the demand on the roads isn't as high. You guys pack so many people onto your roads that you have to have much more intensive road systems.

When I was in Egypt last, I was chatting with the most reckless taxi driver I've ever seen and he told me that traffic lights are just a suggestion, but he had to be careful because he already had two strikes for hitting pedestrians and if he hit a third, he'd lose his license.

Oh yeah I can imagine that, I've seen traffic in Cairo

One image I remember in particular was the sight of a whole family on a single motorbike (parents plus 3 children behind) trying to balance their way between a flood of cars...

It was humorous. We were there for a corporate conference and the government was really intent on not having anyone get hurt for the bad publicity.
So they were serving us a meal in small boats floating on the Nile and the shore was lined with troops. Government gun boats surrounded us and helicopters flew overhead. No paranoia there.
Every time we left the hotel complex as a group, troops escorted our buses.

But we did get to ride camels to the pyramids and have dinner in the desert right next to them, so it was worth it.

Our cab ride was a group of us ditching the conference to play some golf. An oasis of green in the middle of a large desert.

Our corporate conferences were quite cool before we were bought by the French.
