Let's be clear: it is not necessarily a given that Trump will lose the general election. Bill Clinton would beat the tar out of him. Obama would have beaten the tar out of him in 2008. But we have neither; we have Hillary, who arouses deep, visceral hatred in large segments of the population for reasons I'm still not totally clear on, and an atheist, literally socialist Jew. Whichever one wins the nomination, both have serious liabilities, and I could see Trump outmaneuvering them (though it is far from guaranteed). If Trump loses the GOP nomination, we will have Ted "Punchyface" Cruz, who seems to have achieved his second-place slot by acting like a modestly saner version of DT. Also--and this is neither here nor there, but I feel obliged to point it out, because it doesn't get the attention it deserves--it appears his mother may have done something deeply unnatural and unhygienic with a donkey.
Anyway, we have heretofore reacted to the Trump phenomenon with contempt, because, yes, he looks and acts ridiculous. However, he has gotten this far by awakening and harnessing the deep-seated rage of blue-collar America. Whether he wins or loses, that enormous, undereducated, underemployed mass of POed gun-owners is not going anywhere. Trump could die from an overdose of orange hair dye tomorrow, and the bulk of the damage caused by his campaign would still be done. Should we maybe stop laughing, and start thinking about where this might end?
