also, the use of a gun in this crime is irrelevant

gun control is still an issue

        yes

but it has nothing to do with this case

UPDATE: Police think the shooting suspect headed north on I-81 and is in Staunton or Waynesboro near I-64.

From our photographer, Griffin Moores: "Currently, there are six law-enforcement vehicles gathered at the Exit 99 on the Highway on 64. Officials not sure if the suspect is east or west of Charlottesville. I have seen mostly law-enforcement officers going eastbound on 64."

Also, there are police officers stationed at the Fishersville exit watching traffic.

From education reporter Megan Williams: "None of the school divisions are on lockdown at this time."

ALERT: Here is the alert, confirmed by the Augusta County Sheriff's Office:

Lester Lee Flanighan (unknown spelling) light skinned black make 6'3" 250lbs 2009 Ford Mustang gray in color VA license plates: WZE-8846

          WHAT HAPPENED THIS MORNING:

Two people working on a live TV shot were killed this morning at the Bridgewater Plaza near Smith Mountain Lake in Franklin County, reports WDBJ TV's website.

Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe said the gunman was a “disgruntled” former employee at the station, according to WUSA-7.

WDBJ7's photographer Adam Ward and reporter Alison Parker were killed in the incident, said the station. Ward was 27 years old. Parker, a JMU grad, just turned 24.

Roanoke.com reports deputies are searching the area for a gunman. The site is also saying that Vicki Gardner, head of the SML Chamber of Commerce, was shot in the back and is in surgery.

A video posted on YouTube shows a WDBJ crew doing a live shot when it was apparently disrupted by gunshots. The station confirms a shooting took place during a live shot.

In the video, a glimpse of the gunman wearing black can be seen walking by the camera lens which has fallen to the deck of a balcony where the live broadcast was taking place.

Jeff Marks, WDBJ president and general manager, spoke on air at 8:45 a.m. about the tragedy 8:45 a.m.

"We always say 'senseless' crime," said Roanoke.com in a web story. "How can this individual have robbed Alison and Adam's families of their lives and loves?"

Ward graduated from Salem High School and Virginia Tech, the station reported.

Parker grew up in Martinsville and attended Patrick Henry Community College and James Madison University.

Time stamps on the video indicate it happened the shots were fired at 7:45 a.m.

A man claiming to be Bryce Williams called ABC News over the last few weeks, saying he wanted to pitch a story, and wanted to fax information. He never told ABC News what the story was.

This morning, a fax was in the machine (time stamped 8:26 a.m.) almost two hours after the shooting. A little after 10 a.m., he called again, and introduced himself as Bryce, but also said his legal name was Vester Lee Flanagan, and that he shot two people this morning. While on the phone, he said authorities are “after me,” and “all over the place.” He hung up. ABC News contacted the authorities immediately and provided them with the fax.

In the 23-page document faxed to ABC News, the writer says “MY NAME IS BRYCE WILLIAMS” and his legal name is Vester Lee Flanagan II. He writes what triggered today’s carnage was his reaction to the racism of the Charleston church shooting:

“Why did I do it? I put down a deposit for a gun on 6/19/15. The Church shooting in Charleston happened on 6/17/15…”

“What sent me over the top was the church shooting. And my hollow point bullets have the victims’ initials on them."

It is unclear whose initials he is referring to. He continues, “As for Dylann Roof? You (deleted)! You want a race war (deleted)? BRING IT THEN YOU WHITE …(deleted)!!!” He said Jehovah spoke to him, telling him to act.

Later in the manifesto, the writer quotes the Virginia Tech mass killer, Seung Hui Cho, calls him “his boy,” and expresses admiration for the Columbine High School killers. “Also, I was influenced by Seung–Hui Cho. That’s my boy right there. He got NEARLY double the amount that Eric Harris and Dylann Klebold got…just sayin.'"

In an often rambling letter to the authorities, and family and friends, he writes of a long list of grievances. In one part of the document, Williams calls it a “Suicide Note for Friends and Family."

He says has suffered racial discrimination, sexual harassment and bullying at work
He says he has been attacked by black men and white females
He talks about how he was attacked for being a gay, black man

“Yes, it will sound like I am angry...I am. And I have every right to be. But when I leave this Earth, the only emotion I want to feel is peace....”

“The church shooting was the tipping point…but my anger has been building steadily...I’ve been a human powder keg for a while…just waiting to go BOOM!!!!”

Usually the people who do mass shootings are straight white men

Virginia killings: America is now averaging more than one mass shooting per day in 2015

August 26 is the 238th day of the year. And with the fatal shooting in Virginia — in which a gunman shot himself after killing two reporters and wounding one more person — plus the shooting of four during a Minneapolis home invasion, the number of mass shooting incidents in the US has risen to 247 for the year.

These numbers are compiled by the moderators of the GunsAreCool subreddit, a sarcastically named community that tracks gun violence in America. They define "mass shooting" as any single incident in which at least four people are shot, including the gunman. The tracker comes in for some criticism because its definition is broader than the FBI's definition, which requires three or more people to be killed by gunfire. But the broader definition is nonetheless a useful one, because it captures many high-profile instances of violence — like the recent Lafayette theater shootings — that don't meet the FBI's criteria.

Some gun rights advocates — like John Lott of the Crime Prevention Research Center — object that the broader definition includes a lot of gang killings and domestic disputes that the average person wouldn't necessarily consider a "mass shooting." But there's an uncomfortable assumption here that some crime victims' lives should be valued differently — or are less worthy of attention — than others.

A more expansive definition of "mass shooting" underscores the extent to which firearms make it relatively easy to hurt large numbers of people in a very short time. With a gun, you're able to inflict bodily harm on a person once they're in your line of sight. With something like a knife or your hands, you need to get right up close to a person.

There's no easy fix to gun violence in this country. As gun rights proponents are quick to point out, municipalities with strict gun laws, like Chicago and D.C., see more than their fair share of gun crime. But it's nevertheless a fact that the level of gun violence we see in the US is like nothing seen in other wealthy Western nations.
