MtG would have been the target of Imran's trolling with this if he still posted here. Not Ben.

The impressive thing about Appomattox was 1) That Lee was willing to surrender instead of wage an insurgency (if he hadn't, who knows when it would have ended and how many more would have died), and 2) that Grant was willing to give clemency and allowed Lee's troops to return home.

Most civil wars end in atrocities against the losing side. The US Civil War ended about as gracefully as possible, thanks to Lee and Grant.

Southerners were allowed to lynch and oppress negroes for an extra hundred years... as a signing bonus?

That was a consequence of Johnson rolling back reconstruction, not the surrender.

Though, yeah, HC is right that the blame lays on rolling back Reconstruction. The "Radical Republicans" in Congress were much more thorough in what they wanted - including a Civil Rights Act similar to what passed 100 years later.

Johnson was, in my opinion, the worst president the United States has ever had. Interestingly, it appears he was probably more racist than Stonewall Jackson and even Lee. Or so I've read. That could be some revisionist bull**** but I think it's true.

He was pretty damned horrible. The most amazing thing though is that he looks EXACTLY like Tommy Lee Jones... no, really:

                          Actually, he doesn't at all.

Stonewall Jackson secretly taught blacks to read when he was a professor at VMI in contravention of Virginia law; he was definitely less racist than Johnson.
