  • He would be an example of a good muslim who does not support terrorism. The heart of the problem is do you reliably tell the two apart when you are processing several million per year without letting some terrorists or their supporters through?

Something else is interesting. If a nonmuslims said the exact same thing you just know people like Mobius and Imran would accuse them of racism which really does expose their double standards.

    • @ Cockney: I will grant you that it would be interesting to take the same poll in France again.

does it mean: have some sympathy with the aims of x organisation, or; be prepared to provide money or other help to them, or; be prepared to actively take part in their activities? i suspect that most would be in the first group, with a far smaller proportion in the second and a really tiny amount of people in the third.

i wonder what the numbers would have looked like if you has asked americans about their views on the IRA during the troubles.
Well exactly. I was holding back on the IRA point for later ammunition...

FWIW: I would have supported jailing any American giving monetary support to Sinn Fein/IRA.

So your argument is quite literally: Well they ALL look brown to me!

And no it's not a double standard, he is specifically allowed to get away with it because he is from the same community. But non muslims have said words to that effect and not come across as being racist - hell I agree with the sentiment too...

            • Well since the US was founded by a bunch of radicals that violently overthrew their government and tried to guarantee that the same option would be available to future generations, I'm not surprised that quite a percentage of Americans think it's necessary at any given time considering the overall opinion of the Government.

However the fact that there being a black president is the focal point of a lot of those currently dissatisfied is troubling but also not surprising.

Hey Oerdin, have you ever - at any point in your life - supported the aims of the IRA? Be honest now...

Well exactly. I am frequently surprised how many people, when polled all sorts of stuff, come back with really whacked opinions - in any country.

Oerdin hasn't yet outlined his methodology for his 35%/30-40% muslims support terrorists argument. And, as cockney points out, what kind of support anyway? One person's terrorist is another person's freedom fighter, after all...

                    Hey Oerdin, question for ya:

Have you ever considered nuking them from orbit?

You know, just to be sure...

without nuance these kind of polls are worthless and give misleading impressions.

                      • also we all, every one of us i suspect, support the aims of some terrorist organisation (as defined by at least one government) or other.

                        • After working in survey research for decades I guarantee that I could work up a survey that could define almost anybody as a terrorist.

No. I am not Irish and even pissed off some guys in the Irish Army base in Kosovo when I said Ireland would have been better off without the war of independence, civil war, and time of troubles.

                            • Hmm, really, so you don't think that their freedom from the tyranny of British rule (we were c*nts to the Irish) was worth fighting for? What about Texas? Do you think that it should still be part of Mexico? Or the US for that matter, are you saying that the US should still be a British colony...? Are you saying you wouldn't have supported the American 'freedom fighters' in their war of independence...!?

I mean, chucking all that tea in the harbour - that's an act of terrorism right there to a British person!

                              • Also, still waiting for your methodology on how you got to 35%/30-40% of muslims supporting terrorism from the link you provided.

Am I to assume, because you've quietly dropped all mention of it, that you are indeed wrong after all (as usual)...?
