The individual mandate is not significant enough a penalty to matter.
So you're ok with this whole forcing people to buy insurance thing?

Premiums are up 78 percent this year alone for young men.

Here ya go Reg. Anybody who didn't see this coming? Bueller? Bueller?

Soon the penalty will exceed the cost of coverage, Comrade.

Children under the age of 18 will be fined $162.50.
Uninsured Americans who decide not to enroll will face a penalty of $325 per person
That's 3 weeks of a rent payment for many here, payable to the government. God help you if you have 2 kids, family of four will pay 974 dollars a year!

I wonder what effect that would have on the ol' economy.

you should probably disregard that number

it seems to be making the rounds on right wing sites

and i can't find any legitimate information corroborating it

Once again, it seems conservatives need to increase their compatibility with reality.

Study: Many health insurance premiums down in 2015

Many Greater Cincinnati consumers will see a price drop in premiums for private health insurance when open enrollment starts next week for the second year of the Affordable Care Act.

Premiums for the most low-cost coverage of one insurer, Molina Marketplace, drop by nearly 35 percent, according to a new study conducted by the Urban Institute and funded by the Robert Wood Johnston Foundation.

Increased competition among carriers has kept a lid on premium increases for the lowest-cost insurance plans, the study found.

“If you look at a large number of markets, the Cincinnati market among them, premium growth was pretty low if not negative,” said John Holahan, the study’s lead author. “People can buy coverage at very low cost in 2015.”

Under the Affordable Care Act, the period in which shoppers can sign up for new or different health-care plans begins Nov. 15 and runs through Dec. 15 for coverage starting Jan. 1, 2015. The season for signing up is called open enrollment.

The study examined the change in premium costs between 2014 and 2015 in 17 states and the District of Columbia where carriers had finalized premiums for the next year. The researchers focused on premiums for “silver” plans, the lowest-cost of the silver, gold and platinum levels of insurance offered through the healthcare.gov marketplace.

Premium drops, the study said, were more common in urban areas, but 2015 premiums were increasing for rural parts of the country.

In Cincinnati, premiums for five of the seven silver plans for private insurance have all gone down for 2015. The premium increases are silver plans offered by Humana, up 16.7 percent, and Anthem BlueCross BlueShield, up 8.5 percent.

Molina Marketplace will show a 34.8 percent drop in premiums for the silver plan in 2015. Lisa Rubino, Molina’s senior vice president in charge of marketplace, said the company has reduced rates in 10 of the 11 states in which it operates, California being the exception.

“Last year, there was a fair amount of unknowns,” Rubino said. “We assumed a sicker population coming in, and we found that the risk of the population was not as sick as we expected. We took that assumption into our pricing for 2015, and we’re assuming a healthier mix.”

Kentucky was not included in the Urban Institute study. However, most premiums for private health insurance through Kentucky’s exchange, Kynect, will increase in 2015 by about 15 percent.

Most of the 521,000 Kentuckians who used Kynect in 2014 were added to Medicaid, the government health-insurance program for the poor and disabled. Only about 85,000 Kentuckians used the site to purchase private plans.

For 2015, officials have approved a 15 percent average rate increase for the Kentucky Health Cooperative, which sold 75 percent of Kynect’s private plans.

Humana and Anthem BlueCross BlueShield each sold 12.5 percent of the private plans. Humana’s premiums will rise an average of 12.8 percent, but Anthem’s will drop an average of 4.3 percent. Two new companies, CareSource and WellCare, will join the exchange for 2015.

                            Premiums of silver-level private insurance

The Urban Institute and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation studied the change in premium pricing in 17 states, including Ohio, and the District of Columbia. In Cincinnati, most premium costs are showing a decline. Here are the 2014 monthly premiums/2015 monthly premiums and (percentage change) for silver-level coverage for a 40-year-old:

                            • Humana: $216 / $252 (up 16.7%)

                            • CareSource: $238 / $232 (down 2.6%)

                            • Ambetter: $262 / $236 (down 9.9%)

                            • HealthSpan: $274 / $268 (down 2.2%)

                            • Anthem BlueCross BlueShield: $294 / $319 (up 8.5%)

                            • MedMutual: $359 / $353 (down 1.8 percent)

                            • Molina Marketplace: $431 / $281 (down 34.7 percent)

That 78% figure is likely completely made up.

btw, removing the subsidies (what the GOP wants) is how you make costs go up

as per usual, if government sucks, it's because they made it suck

Subsidies don't reduce costs, Sava. They shift them to other people.
