I hated it. It seemed thoroughly generic. Couldn't play it past the first couple dungeons.

The last Final Fantasy game that I really enjoyed the most, was Final Fantasy III on SNES - the one with Terra as main hero, and with power of magic coming from magicite and beings known as Espers.

I thought Final Fantasy VII - with Cloud as main hero - was fun, but not as great as Final Fantasy III for some reason.

See, I grew up with a Genesis, so I played the Phantasy Star series when I needed an RPG time-suck. I don't have any sentimental memories of Terra, Cecil, Crono, et al, whom I never encountered until I got to college and discovered the wonders of emulation. Does anybody these days make an RPG which is actually challenging? I mean, the original Phantasy Star, or the original Final Fantasy, were often pretty brutal--that Ice Cave where half the enemies could insta-kill you, or PS's massive mazes you basically had to painstakingly map to get through--and while I wouldn't call those fun, by the time I stopped bothering with consoles (after the PS1), RPGs were rather pathetic affairs where you could beat all but the optional super-boss enemies with little effort.
