I admire these people's willingness to drag a trivial business dispute to court on pure principle--after successfully resolving the difficulty without involving the law--and stand up for their right to have their food grudgingly prepared by people who don't like them.

Similar to how blacks and whites did sit-ins in diners during the Civil Rights movement, to force integration in those places, and - GASP - have servers who don't like them grudgingly prepare food for them.

Yes, there is indeed an entire system of segregation set up to keep homosexuals from getting a homoerotic Sesame Street cake. It's obvious; society in general today is ferociously opposed to homosexuals and homosexual rights. These folks just happened to find the only other baker in town willing to stand up to the system and take their business; this narrowly-averted tragedy must not be risked again. "First they came for the gay bakery customers . . ."

Srsly, stop insulting the Civil Rights movement by comparing it to a spiteful and frivolous lawsuit.

Elok is right. Gays are hated just enough for nothing to be done about it.

Tell that to black civil rights leaders who were/are not offended, and who see that gay people are deserving of civil rights.

But let's not ignore the point you made. You said this is forcing people to serve those whom they may hate. Then I replied to your point, that this is what the Civil Rights movement of the 1950s and 60s did, too.

the comparison seems valid, at least on one level: members of the oppressed group standing up to the bigots, and sending a message that their bigotry is socially unacceptable; although of course the means are different.

This could all have been avoided if they rejected the order and gave no reason, or a plausible fake one.

yes, and i think it says something about the proprietors that they felt the need to make a statement saying that preparing the cake would be 'at odds with their beliefs'.
