  • So anyone else happy SMAC2 is finally being made?

Or at least the closest we'll get to it.

We have a lot of grousing about what a disappointment Civ 5 was going at AC2 - and some of the guys are very put out about statements on how different it will be from SMACX.

Still, there's a lot of excitement in the air, for all the Dales of the net claiming otherwise.

I'd rather people went in with lower expectations than get burnt so badly again. I think a wait-and-see attitude is a superior take to either euphoria or overly-bitter grousing about past let-downs. BE not speaking to SMACX fans the way they want to be spoken to is probably the way to bet, but BE will no doubt have virtues of its own...

I think it's probably for the better that it is not an AC2 sequel. Their design creativity would've been more limited by its predecessor. Basically the only expectations they have to fulfill are the expectations of Civlization 5 players. That's their most important target audience. Earth Beyond does have an advantage in the current interration of Sci-Fi 4x games. Most of them are galaxy/star system bound, they are not planetary bound like Beyond Earth.

It's a pity that all the AC lore assets are not being used. The planet, the mind worms, the xenofungus, i will miss all this stuff.

I am curious though, did Firaxis/2k try to acquire AC rights from EA? Did EA ask for a way too big price?

I'm definately wait-and-see. I still play SMACX, and never even felt like trying CivV after seeing what they did with it.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Me either. I made a lot of avatars, never interested in the game even before it turned out to suck.

Pandora was kinda meh, i don't know who the hell decided to use a flat pop growth model in a 4X game, but it completely ruined a game for me.

I hope they won't bust it in BE. Though i'm sure that BE will not have the same exponential growth SMAC had, unfortunately. I really liked that feeling of growth when i played SMAC.

First improvements, first buildings, boreholes, crawlers, wonders, lifted resource limits - all of it felt like such an important step in your growth. When i play modern games like Civ 5 or especially something like EU4, i really miss that feeling. You do a lot of different things, and they account for like 5% growth. Why even bother? In SMAC you were doubling your entire economy in 20 turns i think? Or maybe even faster.
