As long as countries have existed, even friendly countries spy on each other for their own ends. They certainly do not share everything with their allies, and their spying is absolutely not always sanctioned by the home countries governments.

That's the thing. The US can't spy on most Americans and the UK can't spy on most British citizens so the two agree to spy on each others citizens and then share the data. Mission Accomplished!

      It's an obvious illegal dodge.

We share our signals intelligence (what the NSA collects) with the other English-speaking countries and they share their stuff with us.

Exactly. We spy on each other, with permission, then share the data thus getting around domestic laws which don't allow the spy agencies of each country to spy on their own citizens. The end result is both governments get all the data without technically breaking existing law. It's still authoritarian nonsense which breaks the spirit of the law of both countries even if not the letter of the law. This needs to change and laws need to be strengthened to stop this bull****.

Even the "we delete it after one month" thing is a complete lie. The US CIA deletes the data after one month but British intelligence keeps it forever while British intelligence might delete its domestic data after a month (or what ever time period) but the CIA keeps it forever. So effectively both have access to 100% of all telephone, text, and internet data forever because they both share everything. It's just a dodge.

Don't say this! UK citizens might actually have to take responsibility for their government's role in spying!

I am all for my government spying on anyone who isn't a citizen or legal resident. I am all for my government protecting me from being spied on by anyone.

Anyone who doesn't feel this way, in any country, should have their head examined.

People from other countries are just jealous because we are so darn good at it.

Yes, we are jealous because everyone is spying on everyone and most that you do is tracked in at least seven different databases in the world. Lovely , no problem as long as you do not step on someone's toes.

Not all of it, and certainly not much of what they collect spying on us (and vice versa).

Hmmm, not getting publicly caught is the game? In which case, not very good. There seem to be better covert operators out there.
