For those who aspire to live in a high cost, high tax, big government place, our nation and the world offers plenty of options. Vermont, Canada and Venezuela all offer you the opportunity to live in the socialist, big government paradise you long for. –Senator Rubio

I'm voting for Skynet. I know it's reading this now, and I want it to know I've always been loyal.

Extinction as in the complete eradication of the human species?

Given our global dispersion and adaptability, I don't think anything could cause our complete destruction. As long as there is some semblance of life on earth (water, oxygen, etc.), there will be populations of humans, no matter how small, surviving somehow.

Over the next millennium, as human populations spread beyond this planet, the survivability of our species will increase significantly if only because of greater dispersion.

I've written lengthy posts criticizing how technology is represented in Civ before but I think this demonstrates another problem. With a global population of 7 million, most of the land being wastelands, etc. in this game, there's just no way they would maintain the same high level of technology and keep producing tanks, nukes, etc. There's no going backwards technologically in Civ. Always thought the technology and especially the units you can build from that technology should be contingent on development level. If nuclear war reduces your 100 million person nation to 2 million, you will lose a lot of technological sophistication.

Ideally, if I were designing civ, I would put population, literacy, commerce level, etc. requirements on producing buildings/units from technologies and advancing. If there's a lot of destruction and you fall below those thresholds, you lose the ability to construct buildings/units and advance along the tech tree. Once those levels are met, you play normally. If 50+ years passes with you below those thresholds, you lose that technology and will have to re-research it.

Civ really ticks me off how Sid Meier designed it.
                              lol
they'll survive somehow even if they live in a nuclear wasteland and regress to simple hunter-gatherer technology
                              yep
                              humanity will never go extinct

                                ???

Yeah that's what I said. We won't go extinct as long as there's basics like oxygen, water, and tolerable temperatures.

I have no idea what that quote is supposed to mean.
