It's unrealistic to expect able bodied people to take care of themselves and their spawn?

      • Then replace "green beans" with "potatoes", "rice" or "pasta".

Not when they fight to keep 24 hour Walmarts out of their cities, they don't.
No, I did not steal that from somebody on Something Awful.

Incidentally, pointing to some tiny shiver of people who accidentally fall into a definition as if that somehow disproves the whole group exists is really, really goddamn stupid. I suppose a millionaire choosing to fast for a week means that a group classified as going hungry isn't an issue too right?
Since when did 99% of the population, as another poster put it, qualify as a tiny sliver?

As I stated previously and as you ignored since you are just talking to your imaginary charicatures instead of actual posters in this thread, if people were talking about the Very Low category they have my attention as these are actual hungry people (as the definition suggests given it actually mentions hunger). Resources should be focused here because that's who really needs it . When dumbasses invent terms like food insecurity and include people that would qualify under the Low category which has no resemblance to what normal people would call challenged in food supply in any way it's done for either two reasons:

1.) Artificially expand the numbers and exploint citizens normal casual expectation of what food insecure should mean to lie about the status of the nations nutrition.

2.) expand those who qualify for payouts regardless of their need for political purposes.

The actual effect on the real hungry is to dilute the resources available to them or to sour the publics perception of them when perfectly fine people in the meaningless Low category are confused with real hurting people in the Very Low because douche bag liars lump them all together in the meaninglessly broad term "food insecure."

If you care about hunger you don't let yourself be puppeted into political non words at the expense of those same hungry.

Oh, please. Yes they do have access to a supermarket. Good lord, there are probably five within walking distance of my apartment in midtown Pittsburgh (not a particularly wealthy area). And you can get frozen food at the supermarket for cheap if you don't have time to ****ing boil something. Dude, how long do you think dinner takes to make? An hour tops unless it's really elaborate. And that's only if it's a hot dinner. If you take longer than 15 minutes to prepare cold food you probably have an IQ south of 60. It doesn't take longer to make peanut butter sandwiches than it does to drive to McD's.

A parent working two jobs, taking kids to school, doing laundry, housework etc etc etc does not always have time to spend an hour preparing hot fresh meals. This is not a controversial subject, it's basic ****ing maths. Start by taking a day and subtracting two work shifts, then subtract sleeping hours, then subtract travel etc and see what exactly you are left with.

Even if they do have a few hours spare, if you're on your feet working two manual jobs, then standing on your feet for another hour to cook is not exactly simple. There are a lot of very hard working and very exhausted people out there desperately trying to provide for their families, and it's ****ing obnoxious to pretend that they are stupid or lazy. Seriously, get out of your ****ing bubble.

                • Boil water: 10 minutes.
Put pasta in boiled water to cook: 5 minutes.
Heat pasta sauce in microwave concurrently: 0 minutes.
Slice bread, put butter and diced garlic in preheated oven concurrently: 0 minutes.

Feed family of four for fifteen minutes of effort, half of which you are free to do something else. I can probably get this meal down to under $5.00 total.

                  OR

Brush cheapest whitefish with teaspoon of oil, sprinkle with dry dill, then wrap in foil with sliced lemon: five minutes.
Place in oven to cook: 20 minutes.
Place pot on stove to boil concurrently: 0 minutes.
Go do something else while fish cooks for: 15 minutes
Return and put can of green beans in water, use steam basket it you got it: 5 minutes.

Unwrap fish and feed family of four for 10 minutes of work, this mean is probably under $5.00 total.

                  OR

Grate one block of sharp cheddar cheese: 5 minutes.
Mix with a few taespoons of mayo or to taste, one 4oz can of piemento peppers, a dash of hot sauce: 5 minutes.
Spread on you family of fours two kids sandwich bread, pack with a box of raisins or an apple and a quarter for milk: 1 minute per day.

You just fed your kids lunch for a school week for 15 minutes, probably for less than $8.00 (I added a dollar for milk, two for apples).

                  This is REALLY, REALLY easy.

                    • I'm just baffled by Kentonio's insistence that people working multiple jobs might not have enough time to feed themselves and their families. Or the money. Kentonio, do you ever cook? Perhaps you are the one in a bubble? You seem to have no sense of the difficulty, time, or cost of normal household activities.

They can, but it involves making stuff that might have "helper" in the product name.

If your local food pantry isnt running out of food that is.
