The announcement will be at 9:00 A.M. CEST (Central European Standard Time) which is about 2:00 A.M. CST (Chicago). But Fermilab has already announced the "strongest indication to date" of the existence of it.

    http://news.yahoo.com/higgs-boson-ph...news-tech.html

Hopefully CERN will say the same thing.

Looks like they found it, according to CERN site!:

“We observe in our data clear signs of a new particle, at the level of 5 sigma, in the mass region around 126 GeV. The outstanding performance of the LHC and ATLAS and the huge efforts of many people have brought us to this exciting stage,” said ATLAS experiment spokesperson Fabiola Gianotti, “but a little more time is needed to prepare these results for publication.”

From what I gather, they've "proved" that a Higgs exists. There was a curious lack of results in a particular decay channel (pairs of tau/anti-tau), and this apparently hints at new physics beyond the Standard Model.

Yes, exactly it's definitely a boson, definitely a Higgs, but might not be a Standard Model Higgs. Which would be more exciting in some ways.

Not at all sure it is a Higgs, although they were looking for a SM Higgs (the overall trial factor would be higher without that assumption).

I would just leave it as "Probably they saw the SM Higgs".

It might not be possible to verify everything without the Linear Collider.

If it's important enough, can this particle be promoted to a more dignified rank than bosun? Like supercargo or maybe first mate. I refuse to believe our present model of physics is supervised by such a low-ranking officer.

Why the skepticism? The scientist bloggers I've been reading seem to think this is a pretty solid discovery.

If they look where they expect the SM Higgs to be, they reject the Null Hypothesis by ~5 sigma. (this is the big announcement)

If they look everywhere, they reject the Null Hypothesis by ~1 sigma. (this is not really mentioned)

If they expect the SM Higgs, then they reject the SM Hypothesis by ~1 sigma. (this is the 'might not be the SM Higgs', which is mentioned)

In physics 1-2 sigma is agreement (not rejecting it), and the first statement is a bit dodgy (due to the assumptions).

I really upset my Mom's cousin's husband when I was talking about how much money was spent on fundamental physics research with no near term financial gain.

People carry out "ridiculous wastes of money" in their private expenditures all the time if we assume a failure to maximize the average utility of the human race is a "ridiculous waste of money".
