Cutting aid to the Pakis by only 33 million is a ****ing joke. We could send a much clearer message by cutting Pakistan off completely and pouring money and guns into India.

No, the real joke is that Pakistan -- which has "major non-NATO ally" status -- closed crucial NATO ground supply lines to Afghanistan over six months ago, but this is what we're getting tough about.

No, I meant to throw quotations around "tough" but was too lazy to go back and edit.

Sure, if we wanted to do something stupid just because we're mad.

The use of the word "Paki" in this thread makes me wonder why it's considered such an offensive racial slur in some parts.....

Yeah, if strippers can pretend that you're sexy for 100 bucks, the Paki's could at least pretend to be our allies for a billion.

For example, if I said this, I could conceivably be arrested.

Wait, Paki is a slur? I just thought it was easier to say. Like Brit or Aussie. Also if you can be arrested for saying a slur, your country's free speech laws suck.

We went over this before, and while Imran and the Brits went on blathering about feelings and racism and other nonsense that I don't care about, I did research and came up with a reasonable explanation for breaking from the usual morphology. Pakistan apparently means land of the pure, and since it would be boastful of people to call themselves pure, the preferred term is Pakistani, people of the land of the pure. I use the slur knowingly, since Pakis are the terrorist harboring, daughter burning, trailor trash of the human race. Imran excepted.

Also, Dauphin doesn't come from a country with freedom of speech. I don't even think he's allowed to own high powered rifles without a permit. Poor bastard would rather be alive than free.

Paki means "Holy". Pakistan means "holy Land" (or land of the holy). Context is important.

If you call someone from the Indian sub-continent a Paki whilst in the UK, you are likely to get a similar reaction as calling a black person a "nigger". It's almost the same level of insult.

Racially aggravated hate speech - speech that causes public disorder - is a criminal offence.

You won't get arrested for calling someone a nigger in the US. That's absolutely preposterous. What a ****ing stupid rule. The people who fly off the handle at a verbal insult are the ones that belong in jail, because they're the psychopaths.

I don't agree with the law. A conversation for another time.

I raised the issue more because the loose use of the word sounds strange to my ear, albeit I know it's contextual position

Also, if you bump into someone in the street. That can technically be an assault. The severity and treatment of the crime is contextual.

    Really? Intent means nothing?

Is it attempted murder if you get into a fender bender?

Intent or recklessness. If you aren't looking where you are going, is that reckless? Potentially.

Assualt that is, I don't know technicalities of attempted murder.

So bumping into someone on the street by accident is reckless walking?

If you bump into someone, they fell down some stairs and injured themselves as a result. Who is liable?

One could certainly be held liable in a civil action.

If you want to prosecute as a criminal matter ("assault" was the term used) you had better come up with mens rea.

You would never be prosecuted though, even if you intended to bump into the person, unless there was injurous/intended injurous consequence.

It's a side issue to my point, and I will say I was being insufficiently precise. I will rephrase to say that, if I intentionally came up and patted you on the back for a job well done, that can be construed as assault (in analogy to the original issue of racial slurs that we were discussing earlier). It would never be prosecuted though.

You talked a lot of bollocks about how Pakistani's shouldn't have the right to be offended by a term that has been used to insult and denigrate them for decades. You seemingly decided that you enjoyed flinging racial slurs around too much to just stop after being told it wasn't ok.
