Looking to buy a car and a motorcycle

Will be moving to the suburbs soon, so we need some machines

Wife will still be commuting about 30 miles each way. Thinking a porsche cayman for her. I'll be within 5 miles. Want to learn to ride. Short distances, so something cheap and japanese? for me. Any suggestions on either? On the bike I could also go for something restored if there's a reasonably priced classic model that would be suitable.

I've never owned a motorcycle but I imagine it would get old real fast. Buy a car to drive on your daily commute and if you still want a bike buy one as a weekend toy. This goes double if you want a classic European bike which will all have issues restored or not.

As a point of reference, if I don't get a motorcycle for myself I will get a bicycle.

Alright then if you want to learn to ride you should get something like a 600cc Japanese bike so that you can learn without killing yourself on a high horse power beast of a bike. Learn on the smaller one, get a feel for how they handle, where the edge of the envelope is, and what sort of riding position you're looking for in a bike (upright, crouched over on a sport bike, or one of the combo type bikes). I hear Honda's CBR bikes are good all around while Kawis and Yamahas vie for the top performance spot. You're going to be tempted to buy more bike than you can handle without experience but then the odds are you'll just wheelie or spin out so I'd avoid that temptation and start modest to build up your experience.

Lastly, about 17 years ago I saw a guy killed on a bike because he took off right when the light turned green and some a-hole ran a red because he thought he could still make it. Just remember you can be the best rider in the world but if the other dumbshit does something stupid you're the one who dies because the car's mass is much more than yours. In a car it might just be a fender bender but on a bike you are the crumple zone.

man, what´s with this bikes-are-dangerous-fetish of yours. i have one of the most powerful bikes in existence (1.1L engine) and zero accidents in 10 years. it´s my fourth bike. 3 accidents in my car, however, last few years?

Bikes are dangerous. It's a question of calculated risk; how and where you ride. I carry 2MM of life insurance on myself, so I won't be stranding my family...

If it's a 7 min drive you might as well walk.

Assuming your average urban rush hour speeds are the same as mine, which they might not be.

If I was thinking of getting a Porsche for the wife, I'd certainly be thinking something just as nice for myself.

Motorcycles are seriously dangerous. If it were me, having generous life insurance doesn't really make up for the fact that I'd be dead.

Suburban is as dangerous as it gets for motorcycles.

    Think distracted soccer moms.

    Suzuki Bandit.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Suzuki_Bandit_series

Far more comfortable to ride than hardcore racer bikes. They're great all-rounders.

On the other hand, if you've got plenty of spare cash and want something really brutal, get a Yamaha V-Max.
