  • Why don't we raise the gas tax?

The federal gas tax hasn't been raised since 1993.

What has changed since then that would require raising the gas tax? Also, it's obvious that raising the gas tax will not be politically popular when people already think they're paying too much at the pump.

Raises revenue for the government and would (insignificantly, probably) reduce gas consumption.

The gas tax should keep pace with inflation (or be higher).

One of the worst (environmental) subsidies in the US is our subsidies of car transportation via low gas taxes.

That's not a subsidy, Jon, it's just the lack of a disincentive.

As always, you demonstrate your knack for saying something true while completely lacking the insight that it doesn't matter in the least.

You can increase revenue without even changing current law by letting the Bush tax cuts expire so income taxes would go up. The point in a gas tax is to punish gas consumers for the negative impacts their activities have on society (pollution, congestion and wear and tear of roads, fatalities). Unless the gas tax was insufficient in 1993 or drivers have somehow become more harmful in the last 20 years I don't see why it should be raised.

Building roads without making the users pay for them would be a subsidy.

                      1) there is more congestion than there was before
                      2) the evidence for global warming is much better now than it was in 1993
                      3) equally large cars drive more mpg today
                      4) the gas tax has never between high enough in the us

Okay. I guess people who drive cars are leeching off those who don't. I guess Al will appreciate the opportunity to feel superior to the majority of Americans who drive cars and will not accept a higher gas tax.

I would probably say our other major anti-environmental subsidies are agricultural. These have probably a stronger environmental impact than the gas subsidies.

Just what the economy would need right now. Paying more for gas.

I'm totally for raising the gas tax though right now might not be politically possible (election year). Right now the gas tax only covers about 20% of the total cost to just maintain roads & highways and none of the cost to build new ones. We'll need a massive increase in the gas tax if we want roads to be self funding.
