Unhappy DVD stuck in dead laptop

Hi all. Long time no see.

This may be a stupid question but, when it comes to tech, I'm a stupid man. So here goes:

My laptop (a Dell XPS m1530) has died. It's a motherboard issue, so I can't even turn it on. I'm not inclined to fix it; this has been a problem for a while, and I'd rather invest in something new. However, there was a dvd in the slot-style drive when it died; teh drive, as far as I can tell, doesn't have a handy manual release like a tray-style drive would. Given that I can't turn the machine on, is there any way to rescue the DVD without completely disassembling the laptop? Thanks in advance.

Double-check about the manual release, it's odd that the drive wouldn't have one. Failing that, you can probably remove the drive by removing a few screws from the bottom of the laptop - laptop hard drives / optical drives can usually (always, in my experience) be removed without needing to expose the motherboard or whatever.

The slot load drive on those things didn't have a manual release. This is a way you can remove cds and dvds from some slot load drives:

If that doesn't work it's built into the system. Looks like you'll have to open it up.

Insert a slotted screw driver and pry it out. It doesn't matter, since you don't care.

    Good to see you.

Aeson - Thanks for the video. That method doesn't seen to work on my drive, unfortunately; I can get a card in above the DVD, but not below. Looks like I'll be disassembling it.

Sloww, Elok- nice to see you guys, too.

Felch - you're not really helping Elok make his case; you get that, right?

Sounds like CD/DVD drives like yours have taken a huge step backwards in terms of failsafe mechanisms

    I agree with Loinburger ...
normally it should be easy to remove your drive from the Laptop (unless your Laptop is a step backwards in terms of these things as well) ...
afterwards it shouldn´t be a big problem to open the drive case to get better access to the CD/DVD
As part of your equipment, you are to have a trowel, and when you squat outside, you are to scrape a hole with it and then turn and cover your excrement.

I noticed recently that the pinhole had disappeared.
