http://www.freegameempire.com/games/Imperialism is a free-to-download civ-type game covering the nineteenth century with "advances" based on the Industrial Revolution. You have nations and cities and terrain to improve, with diplomacy, trading, railroads and other things familiar to civ players. Minor Nations and hexagonal tiles will be very familiar to players of Civ5.

Like much of the abandonware on FreeGameEmpire, I suspect, it seems to have no manual, but its Help screens are very detailed.

I've posted a screenshot and some introductory sentences at http://civilization.wikia.com/wiki/I...ism_%28game%29

Update. I played it, then played it again, and so on. Hooked.

Too much to write on the Civilization Games Wiki, where it doesn't quite fit. So it's now on a brand-new wiki, http://imperialism.wikia.com - where the many things that are not mentioned on the in-game Help screens can be covered by contributors with experience and/or access to a Manual.

It had a sequel, "Imperialism II: The Age of Discovery", which has more elements that will be familiar to players of "Colonization"; it seems to be also downloadable at no charge from a different website. It's mentioned on the wiki too.

Players of either game would be most welcome to join in and make the wiki a more useful resource.

How is it better than Victoria 2?

Someone who knows something about Victoria 2 may be able to answer that. I know nothing of it.

Propably depends on the target audience ...
Imperialism (if I remember correctly) is a little bit easier than Victoria 2 therefore it probably is better suited for casual gamers than Victoria 2. (just like Civ V is better suited for casual gamers than Civ IV)

Proteus, thanks. I will have to download the Victoria 2 expansion pack which came out last month and see if they haven't improved the game enough to keep it interesting. It was weird because I loved the first Victoria game, found the time period to be very interesting, but some how Victoria 2 just didn't keep my interest the way the first Victoria game did.
