    Kindle Touch: Whoa!

Holy crap, I'm drooling over this!

Gorgeous touch screen eInk reader for $149 with 3G and $99 for Wifi.

That's what you're going to comment on? The Kindle Touch?

Um... yes. The Kindle Fire is nice, but its a stripped down tablet - give me a Samsung Galaxy Tab. The Kindle Touch is just beautiful and a perfect ereader. For one it has eInk instead of LCD.

Yeah, I got to second that. You are drooling over the $99 reader when they are offering a dual core IPS color tablet with high DPI for $100 more?

E-ink. Ugh. Yes, it's better for reading than an LCD, but it's such a backwards technology. It's 2011, man; screens should have colorful, moving pictures on them.

It's a freaking book! I'm not 12, so I don't need my books to have colorful moving pictures on them.

I own a Kindle 2G. It is by far better than any LCD based tablet for reading. No contest. I don't care about a tablet at the moment - I have an Android phone.

And that's the other problem I have with e-ink e-readers. They're single-function items. At least the prices are coming down, though.

    I prefer single function readers.

Well, it probably has a slightly nicer screen than the Nook Simple Touch. I have always prefered Kindle e-ink to everyone else. Don't know why it looks better, but it seems to.

On the other hand, if it still has screen flashes on every page turn, I would prefer the Nook (which flashes only after multiple page turns), assuming that B&N match the $99 price.

Not that I would buy one, of course. I would take the Fire.

Why do you need a touch screen on a reader?

And I'm not impressed with the Fire either. It's cheap, yes, but it's outdated.

I'm more interested in the $79 Kindle. I don't want a touch reader. My screen needs to be pristine.

You don't need touch, but its kinda nice. Allows for a smaller device and more screen real estate dedicated to the reading portion (though the new Kindle seems to have similar specs, IIRC).

And from videos it appears it doesn't have screen flashes every page.

The touch device is quite a bit heavier than the cheaper one,

    $79 non-touch: 6.5" x 4.5" x 0.34", 5.98oz
    $99 touch: 6.8" x 4.7" x 0.40", 7.5oz

Has less storage as well. 2 GB compared to 4 GB. And I dunno if this is just crap, but on Amazon they claim it has 1 month battery life (with wifi off) while touch has 2 months. I don't think it has X-ray either.

3G is also quite nice though.

It might be that the 79 one is the perfect size though (not sure exactly what one I have is, I got it a bit over a year ago).

    This.

I'm going to end up picking up the Kindle Touch 3G(without "Special Offers"). The Kindle Fire is targeted more at eating into the Nook Color's market rather than being a true tablet competitor, and in any event I have a Xoom.

Why do you need a touch screen on a reader?
Smaller and lighter, which appeals to me since I'm normally carrying my Kindle on hiking trips.

What product did they have last year?

I hope you're not referring to their e-readers...I have a buddy who has one and hates the thing. He got it because he's a PhD student and wanted to annotate PDFs, but regrets it immensely.

Then he would have likely regretted having the other readers as much or more.

He must have gotten the Daily Edition. It's the only one larger than the bulky Kindle 3.

Whoops, as I was. Still, the 3G radio is what I would like to have while on a logn distance hike, and the "regular" Kindle doesn't have it.
