Masters in Computer Engineering/Computer Science vs Masters in Information Systems

So in a few years I plan to start a masters degree from a brick and mortar school. I'm not sure which one I should choose.

If I go the masters in IS I can pick up an MBA along with it by just taking a couple extra courses so I'll end up with two masters degrees balanced between business and programming. It's also a much easier route to take as it won't require any preparation beyond me working for 2-3 years first.

The computer Engineering/science route will require a couple of years of preparation since I will have to take calculus 1, 2, and 3 and differential equations in addition to a couple of computer sciences courses that they want for applicants. This isn't a big deal to me and I'm willing to put in the extra effort and investment.

That being said, I don't want to waste time going one route when the other route will just as easily satisfy my goals. Thoughts on this?

    Do you have a bachelors?

A MIS is worthless, don't even bother. It's less about programming and more akin to system administration.

I have a marketing degree (useless) and an information technology degree. The IT degree is enough to get me into the program as long as I take the math courses and the 2-3 CS courses that they want combined with the experience I'll have in 3 years. That's for the masters in computer science.

The Masters in Information systems has OOP in it and involves programming in C# as far as I know, but it also focuses on management and the business aspects. My supervisor, who is the vice president of IT and the future CTO as the company grows, went that route with an MBA and masters of science in information systems.

From a management standpoint, the M.S. in IS makes a lot of sense. That being said, the M.S. in CS is obviously far more rigorous and requires a great deal more of understanding about programming. Eventually I plan to get into project management, but I also love programming and want to understand it on a deeper level beyond simply researching syntax and concepts and then applying them. So, I'm torn between the two. The challenge of pulling off the M.S. in CS is very appealing to me. It will give me something big to work towards over the next few years which is very valuable to me so I don't know.

Here is the link to the USF M.S. in IS http://business.usf.edu/programs/master/mis/index.html#. My supervisor actually says to go the MBA/M.S. IS route, but I'm also thinking about beyond the current company I work for. While it's incredibly fast growing and has huge potential, I also want to make sure I set myself up for the long term so I want the degree that is going to be most useful no matter where I go. Thoughts on this?

    THANK YOU!

Don't go IS. I'm totally a sys admin and it pays paltry sums (but an exorbitant amount for high school drop outs)

M.S. in CS, then M.S. in IS. You'll be bullet-proof then. Once you get into management, believe it or not, it's harder to pursue further education.
That's just said from my own personal experience. It might not hold true for you.

Define system admin. When I think of system admin I think of active directory and other IT related stuff. THat's not what this degree is.

Here's a better link to the requirements. Scroll down a bit to find the relevant stuff.

You could try stopping procrastinating and getting more degrees and just get a job...probably far more valuable in the long run...

Yes, but I didn't ask for it from stupid people. Obviously I wouldn't be considering a masters degree if I still had no job.

You must be retarded. You came into this thread and posted a ridiculously stupid attempt at advice thinking I had no job and was trying to avoid getting one. Did you really expect me not to post something back? What a joke.

But then again, what would I know

You're completely ****ing stupid. The whole point of this thread is which masters degree I should get in 2-3 years. That means I'll have 2-3 years of work experience. The reason I am debating which one is because the masters in CS will require some prep work in order to be accepted. Obviously I would rather start the prep work now and take my time over the next few years than try and complete it all at once. I know reading comprehension is difficult for you, but do try to follow along.

What makes you think a bit of prep work will allow you to both be accepted to and graduate from a masters in cs?

You don't even know calculus 1, but you're asking about one of the more math-intensive subjects around, at a graduate level. For example, loinburger has a compsci msc iirc, and he's much smarter than you.

I posted how you started it. It's very simple. Maybe too simple for another self-proclaimed brainiac like you. He asked a simple question. You and others, as is typical, chose to run your mouth instead. Not everyone is looking for a witty remark on every single occasion. Something like life plans for livelihood, for example.

I took calculus 1, but I don't think it will transfer. Also, there's never been anything I couldn't learn or teach myself so I'm really not worried. As far as math goes, I never went to any of my courses because I could just learn it from the book faster. Somehow I doubt there is going to be something along the way that I can't figure out. You should just go back to eating your cereal and then commentating the color of your ****, KH.
