Trucks Trucks Trucks . .. . or my neck is finally red

Yes -- I have decided to get a truck-- after years of finding cars to be fine I am finding that changing circumstances mean I want or need a truck and am trying to decide which one-- So anyone that has recommendations good or bad, go ahead and contribute. I'll probably ignore all you say and go with Consumer Reports assessments anyway--

Also if you want to interject a rant about consumerism, big trucks and environmental irresponsibility etc etc, that can be a hoot too. (hey threads will go where they will go)

    Ok - minimums

Must be able to tow 5000 pounds (seadoo or boat, ATVs etc etc)
    Must be 4WD--
Must be able to carry 4 adults comfortably ( so a crew max cab and not some dinky extended car or double cabs)
Truck box must be 60 inches or longer

All brands and models considered but I am leaning toward gasoline over diesel for cost and convenience considerations and I am leaning toward vehicles between 1 and 3 years old to avoid that new vehicle premium.

Would also love to hear from anyone that imported a vehicle into Canada from the US as that is a very real option for me given the strength of the Canadian dollar against the greenback combined with generally lower MSRPs in the US and a still cooler economy than here-- all combined it makes for great deals

In my case its the rec property-- There is no minivan, SUV or car that has the versatility and functionality of a pick-up for the things I know we will be doing over the next couple of years

    dead·fall
    [ded-fawl]
    –noun

a mass of brush and fallen trees.

There's ample wood along the banks of the lake fallen from erosion etc etc-- Its easy access right now from the lakebed (lake is down a lot before spring run-off)-- a few hours work and I could colllect enough firewood for months

Illegal?? Only during firebans if the forest fire risk is up. Otherwise a campfire is all good

    I don't know. You can't burn leaves.

My Quad cab is good but cuts into your bed size.

Not under canvas-- Our cabin is on a secluded 5 acre parcel and part of the fun is a campfire as the kids roast hot dogs and marshmallows etc etc-- I have enough smaller deadfall on the land for kindling etc but I'll pick up some larger diameter down by the lake for a good long lasting fire

Oh and who said anything about leaves?? Its mainly pine ---

My dad had a dakota for years and I never liked it much when he had it (although he liked it fine)

I am seeing that there is trade-off between cab size and the size if the bed and have already decided to go for the larger cab size-- I want to be able to comfortably transport 4 adults to the ski hill-- I have already checked and even a 5.5 foot bed is enough to contain my skis (angled across) but I may get a roof-top ski carrier anyway

A friend of mine recently got a Toyota Tundra with a double cab, v8 engine, off-road kit. Mileage is crap, the truck is pretty sweet though. The center console between the front seats is about 2/3rds the size of a school desk. Very manly car. Roomy, gas guzzling, and can haul a 2 ton trailer or so. Trying to parallel park it in a school lot not recommended. This is from experience.

I'm going to pre-empt Alby here and explain why he got it: He ended up getting a full ride scholarship to his school of choice so he used his saved-up cash to buy a car. It's his money, he can ****ing do what he wants with it, now go get a job and stop complaining that people are richer than you. That's your fault.

Don't remember. I doubt it was more than 50 grand. Probably less than that. I can ask.

I think his parents chipped in a bit because they needed a car with a bigger engine anyway to haul their trailer--their v6 just wasn't cutting it.

I'm looking at a DODGE Ram 2500 Diesel for use on my property. Probably club cab.

Flubber, you can get a four door cab with a long bed with Dodge -- just not a BIG four door cab with a long bed.

We are spending more than we have ever spent before and it does not work...After eight years of this Administration, we have just as much unemployment as when we started... And an enormous debt to boot!" — Henry Morgenthau, Franklin Delano Roosevelt's Treasury secretary, 1941.

It should be far less than 50

A double cab ranges from an MSRP of 26275 for the 4.0L V6 4X2 to 40Kish for the 5.7 L V8 4x4 in the pimped out edition-- I'm sure its possible to get to 50K but not easy ( all US pricing from Toyota.com)
