    Website hosting

A couple friends of mine need a website for their small business, and I don't trust any review site to recommend a host for it. I'm looking for something that's cheap and not too hard to use. I'll probably wind up setting up the website, and then pass it on to them to maintain. Would something like GoDaddy be best, or is there some less well known but better company to go with?
Do not take anything I say seriously. It's just the Internet. It's not real life.

Heh, I'm doing a host search myself right now. The one I've come across and think I'll go with is Turnkey Internet. http://www.turnkeyinternet.net/

They have a managed VPS package that will probably work for us.

I'm no expert by any means -- really just a buyer of services for my clients. But I'll share my limited experience FWIW.

Both my company and those of a design firm I co-op with are using Godaddy these days. Much as I hate their advertising and marketing, they have a pretty spotless record with the small business sites (about 8-10 clients) that we've used them for. Good prices, no downtime, and my designers say tech support is good.

I used Apollo for a couple sites and they were unreliable in terms of uptime and questionable re billing practices. But that was 3-4 years ago.

I'm also no fan of CBeyond -- bad tech support, very difficult to get help -- and yet they seem to need a lot of it. Two downtime incidents (one over 24 hrs) in the first month after a site change (full redesign), and they blame WordPress? Then they "upgrade" their Apaches and the whole site (not a small one) comes back up full of dead links and blank photos. (Meanwhile, our control site on Godaddy has run flawlessly the whole time.) This is a current situation, and they are on borrowed time.

That's all I got. Good luck.
