Will it be *nix based?
JM

Will be very different.
Had a meeting last week with MS, but unfortunately had to sign an NDA. But I can share what's already been leaked publicly.
1) It will run on both ARM & x86
2) There are two UIs to choose from, which are radically different: "Immersive" (tablet/touch UI which is similar to the 'Metro' UI on Windows Phone), and a Windows 7-based UI
3) There will be an "app store", but it is not mandatory.
4) Windows 8 binaries can be in a new package. Not an ".exe", but an ".appx" file. These are single files which are containers for all necessary program files, and they are .NET. This means a single "appx" app will run on both ARM & x86 Windows installs, and tablet/desktop installs
5) The Explorer UI is Ribbonized. Not sure if I like it.
More to come.

No.
WinNT 7.0 (2000 = 5.0, XP = 5.1, Vista = 6.0, 7 = 6.1)

Not so interested.

Unix based is not necessarily a good thing. The NT kernel is widely accepted as the most modern and well-designed OS kernel out there.
Linux/BSD/Unix are all older designs.
Linux & Unix tend to be monolithic (large & unwieldy, which is why you need to recompile it so much...). Many BSD versions are microkernels as well (like Mach, used by OS X) but very early versions.
Basically: Linux is monolithic, Mach/OS X is a microkernel, and NT is a hybrid.
Linux's core design is oldest, Mach 2nd oldest, NT newest. NT was designed by taking the best traits of monolithic with the best traits of microkernels.

Mach in general is truly awful in a lot of ways. Apple gets around it by having strict control over developer practices on their platforms.
But if you use lots of threads, Mach grinds to a halt. There are lots of real-world performance problems that have not yet been fully solved.

Is there any truth the Q4 release rumor?

"Capitalism ho!"

No.
MAYBE a beta by then, but I'd doubt it.

Will there be any backwards compatibility issues? Any major burned bridges?

Nope. It still supports legacy 32/64bit Win32/MFC.

This is funny as ****. I'm no computer guru by any means, but so many jumping at 7, and BAM, next breath, let's jump on 8. This is why business moves conservatively.
Life is not measured by the number of breaths you take, but by the moments that take your breath away.

Windows 8 probably won't be out til late 2012. That's over 3 years after Windows 7 came out. Windows 7 will remain supported probably for another 10 years.
Why's it funny?
New cars come out every year...

But you don't have to get a new car every time they make a new model.

You don't need to upgrade to Windows 8 either. As I said, it'll be supported for many years.
Windows 7 is just now passing the Windows XP marketshare number. XP is 10 years old.![]()

Because it has been. I could have gone to Vista, like so many of you jumped for in such a smart decision.

I liked Vista a lot more than XP.

XP was good, and it's nostalgic considering I used it for 10 years, but I could never go back to it after using Windows 7.
Will it be called windows 8

other than that I will most likely be going from Vista to 8... jumping seven, and I am an old curmudgeon who liked Win 2000, let alone XP "better" as it did what I needed it to do... learning new UI which does nothing better... have better things to do with my time, but I guess it is not by choice... let's hope that customization will be an option like in office 10...

I liked 2000 and really didn't want to upgrade to XP.
