  • Memorable song lyrics

I've been listening to Springsteen lately and I was reminded how much these lyrics have always struck me personally.

"Barefoot girl sitting on the hood of a Dodge
Drinking warm beer in the soft summer rain"

Jungleland wasnt his best song (that would be "Born to Run") but that mental picture is special.
We need seperate human-only games for MP/PBEM that dont include the over-simplifications required to have a good AI
If any man be thirsty, let him come unto me and drink. Vampire 7:37
Just one old soldiers opinion. E Tenebris Lux. Pax quaeritur bello.

"Indians scattered on dawn's highway bleeding /
Ghosts crowd the young child's fragile eggshell mind"

Not saying it's brilliant, just memorable.

I might add, from a different decade:

"Making love to / the Mersey Tunnel / with a sausage, have you ever been to Liverpool!"

I need your help, Barry Manilow
Your songs can really comfort the unlucky
Sing me a song, sing it sad and low
I wish I didn't have to feel so yucky...
        I wish I didn't have to feel...

        So yucky!!!

        ACK!
Don't try to confuse the issue with half-truths and gorilla dust!

i can see myself making more than a few posts in this thread

              the chills - pink frost

I want to stop my crying
I want to stop my crying
              But she's lying there dying
How can I live when you see what I've done?
How can I live when you see what I've done?
What can I do if she dies?
What can I do if she dies?
What can I do if she's lost?
Just the thought fills my heart with Pink Frost
              I thought I was dreaming -
so I didn't heed her screaming
              I'm so scared
              I'm so scared
She won't move and I'm holding her head
She won't move and I'm holding her head
              She's lost...Bye Bye Bye
              She's lost...Bye Bye Bye
              She's lost...Bye Bye Bye
              Pink frost...Bye Bye Bye
              I'm really not lying
              I'm so scared
I'll have to stop my crying
              Now she's dead
What can I do if she dies?
What can I do if she dies?
What can I do if she's lost?
Just the thought fills my heart with Pink Frost
              (Oh no!)
and there are so many joy division songs with amazing lyrics, in fact i can't even restrict myself to one, so here's 24 hours and shadowplay.

So this is permanence, love's shattered pride
What once was innocence, turned on its side
Grey cloud hangs over me, marks every move
Deep in the memory of what was love

Oh, how I realised, I wanted time
Put in perspective, tried so hard to find
Just for one moment, thought I'd found my way
Destiny unfolded, watched it slip away

              Excessive flashpoints, beyond all reach
Solitary demands for all I'd like to keep
Let's take a ride out, see what we can find
A valueless collection of hopes and past desires

I never realised, the lengths I'd have to go
All the darkest corners of a sense I didn't know
Just for one moment I heard someone call
Looked beyond the day in hand, there's nothing there at all

Now that I've realised how it's all gone wrong
Got to find some therapy, this treatment takes too long
Deep in the heart of where sympathy held sway
Got to find my destiny before it gets too late
To the centre of the city where all roads meet, waiting for you,
To the depths of the ocean where all hopes sank, searching for you,
I was moving through the silence without motion, waiting for you,
I a room with a window in the corner I found truth.

In the shadowplay, acting out your own death, knowing no more,
As the assassins all grouped in four lines, dancing on the floor,
And with cold steel, odour on their bodies made a move to connect,
But I could only stare in disbelief as the crowds all left.

I did everything, everything I wanted to,
I let them use you for their own ends,
To the centre of the city in the night, waiting for you,
To the centre of the city in the night, waiting for you.
"The Christian way has not been tried and found wanting, it has been found to be hard and left untried" - GK Chesterton.

Eric Clapton - It's In The Way That You Use It

"It's in the way that you use it,
                  It comes and it goes.
It's in the way that you use it,
                  Boy don't you know.

And if you lie you will lose it,
                  Feelings will show.
So don't you ever abuse it,
                  Don't let it go.

                  Nobody's right till somebody's wrong.
                  Nobody's weak till somebody's strong.
No one gets lucky till luck comes along.
                  Nobody's lonely till somebody's gone.

                  [Repeat First Chorus 2x]

                  [Repeat Second Chorus]

I've seen dark skies, never like this.
Walked on some thin ice, never like this.
I've told you white lies, never like this.
Looked into true eyes, never like this.

                  [Repeat First Chorus]"

Born To Run = the greatest five minutes in American history.

However, I'm also partial to "Look at all the happy creatures dancing on the lawn."

I think it interesting that so many people from the north will rally around Born To Run, which indicates they'd like to get away. Whereas, most people born in Texas will remain in Texas at most costs.

EDIT: In fact, I think Thunder Road is a better song and is of the same theme. That's my opinion and I'm entitled to it.

Although I prefer this one by Judee Sill:

There's a rugged road on the prairie
Stretchin' all across the last frontier
                        There a stranger strives solitary
                        Blessed is the lonesome pioneer
Roll on, roll on, roll on
                        Night birds are flyin'
Come on, the light is gone
                        Hope's slowly dyin'
Tell me how you come ridin' through
Still surveyin' the miles yet to run
On the long and lonely road to kingdom come

He can blaze a trail, though the rumblin'
Dims his guiding light to just a spark
When the hour is low, he comes tumblin'
When the moon is high he gives his heart

Roll on, roll on, roll on
                        Night birds are flyin'
Come on, the light is gone
                        Hope's slowly dyin'
Tell me how you come ridin' through
Gainin' steady till this round is won
On the long and lonely road to kingdom come

                        People far below chasin' pleasures
Offer him directions on the run
Prophets on the path offer treasures
Though she's mighty hungry he takes none

Roll on, roll on, roll on
                        Night birds are flyin'

                        Blindly faithful but followin' none
On the long & lonely road to kingdom come

When the sun goes down at the right time
She comes windin' through the purple haze
Just a feather's touch in the night time
But it'll color all my weary days

Shinin' finer than this earthly sun
On the ragged rugged road to kingdom come
On the ragged rugged road to kingdom come

Incidentally just today my law firm found these lyrics pertinent enough to each day that we may have a new theme song:

                            We didn't start the fire
                            It was always burning
                            Since the world's been turning
                            We didn't start the fire
                            No we didn't light it
But we tried to fight it
                            Unbelievable!

They say the game has the belly of a beast
Blunts for fingers and hollow tips for teeth
Wire taps for ears, Nike Airs for feet
Blasphemy for prayers, a system for a heart
Rap music for beats, heroin for a son and its married to the streets
Crack pipes for lungs, and he never sleeps
Just spies, with dice in his eyes
Loves life cause he likes when it dies
With a baking soda soul, he cough up pleasure
Clothes made out of dollar bills that he sewed together
He knows, he's clever, jail is his house
All the liquor that’s poured out, goes right in his mouth
                              Rides around on a stray bullet;
With prostitutes, pimps, dope dealers and killers tied to it to pull it
A TV in his head, stripper slides down his legs
And he’s known to ride around with the feds...
"Flutie was better than Kelly, Elway, Esiason and Cunningham." - Ben Kenobi
"I have nothing against Wilson, but he's nowhere near the same calibre of QB as Flutie. Flutie threw for 5k+ yards in the CFL." -Ben Kenobi
