    Suggest a new game

I need a new game. I wont play a game with Steam so CIV 5 is out and so is STW2. I tried the GALCIV demo and it wasnt my cup of tea. RoN had too much "clicking". Any suggestions?

Caesar 4 is a nice city building game.
Victoria is an interesting empire building game (and should be in the bargain bin for a few dollars).
If you like Civ you could go back to a very old game, Master of Orion 2.
Imperialism 2 is another old game that is excellent (and cheap)
Patrician 3 is an interesting trading game with a touch city and nation building. (and cheap)

How about you dip your toe into the waters of the 21st century and get Steam? What's not to like about it?
Do not take anything I say seriously. It's just the Internet. It's not real life.

Installing Steam means installing a rootkit. Since I pay for anti-malware protection, it seems inane to self-install a program that allows others unrestricted access to my PC just to play a game. If I had a gaming-only rig I'd probably install it, but I dont, so I wont .

I'm not looking for "old games" per ce just games that dont use Steam (or SecuRom) but MOO2 is a possibility. The biggest problem with old games is that they can be a pain in the ass to make work on a new (ish) PC and I dont want to have the hassle. I tried playing M2TW the other day but it still sucks. Maybe I'll try RTW again but I wasnt a fan of that either. I've looked for decent wargames but havent spotted anything that jumps out at me and I have a feeling that I'm ****ed unless I use a Steam hack.

I was looking at some matrix games and came across links to fourthage Total war so I'm gonna down load those RTW mods :yippee:

There are some interesting games from Matrix

"Gary Grigsby's War in the East: The German-Soviet War 1941-1945" This looks like a puter version of the old SPI game that I played as a kid (which I still have).

"Gary Grigsby's War Between The States"

"Forge of Freedom: The American Civil War 1861-1865"

I'm not that thrilled with the American Civil War but I did like SM's Gettysburg (back in the day)

    "Crown of Glory: Emperors Edition"

This seems to be a Napoleonic version of the "War between the states"

    Any experiences with those?

I played EU2 and it was OK. Maybe I need to look at EU3. Like I said above I wasnt thrilled with GALCIV demo. It didnt seem as good as CIV IV.

Not sure that you'll find anything as good as Civ4, at least when it comes to strategy games. Any other genres that you'd consider?

GalCiv takes a while to get the hang of, and a while to really get into it. My first impression was Umh not sure but I finished up having something of an extended GalCiv jag. I still play Gal;Civ@.

I am playing War in the East.
It's more of a serious wargame that I have been used to playing, but although the learning curve is long there are some very good scenarios for learning, and a lot of info available on the forums.

If at all interested in wargames/East front I highly recommend War in the East.

I'm not sure if I am. As I said before I played SPI's "War in the east" in the 70's (I still have it too) so I have a nostalgic connection with the game and would like to see how it plays on a PC. OTOH, I despise the NAZI's and have no interest in re-creating their conquests.

Exactly. Or if you want a really in depth crazy detailed wargame get War in the Pacific Admirals Edition, also from Matrix.

I could do that. I always take pleasure in beating the crap outa the Germans. OTOH, its fairly pricey for 1/2 a game. I noticed the War in the Pacific Admirals edition and its a good suggestion. Why havent you played the Napoleanic or ACW games ?

I am not really interested in wargames of that era.

Also I have only a limited amount of time! I was leary about getting WitE because of the time involved. The other game I have played recently is Starcraft 2, which is excellent, and obviously quite a different kind of game, and not as time engrossing.

Spencer, I'm liking the Europa Barbarorum mod for Rome: Total War. They have one coming out soon for Medieval 2, as well.

At the very least, you'll learn a crapload. There is so much information in that mod.

Another thing you could try would be Mount & Blade... I think it is best described as some kind of Sandbox RPG...
either in form of M&B Warbands (which plays in a fantasy world named Calradia and features medieval fights)
or in Form of "With Fire and Sword", which plays in 17th century eastern europe (and therefore also features firearms) and plays along the novel of a polish author about the foundation of poland (as it came out in the beginning of the month, it still has a couple of bugs that need to be fixed however)

You can find them both here:

    http://www.taleworlds.com/

(game is free to play until your char reaches a certain experience level...afterwards you need to enter a key (which you can buy from taleworlds) to continue playing with this char)
As part of your equipment, you are to have a trowel, and when you squat outside, you are to scrape a hole with it and then turn and cover your excrement.

How about Sins of the Solar Empire?
This is where an awesome Mark Twain quote would be, but Apolyton says it would be too many lines. :(

In my opinion Sins of a Solar Empire is somewhat overrated. Never quite got the hang of it. It is kind of hard to find a good alternative to the Civ's series...
