Looking at population projections for Texas, demographer Steve Murdock concludes: "It's basically over for Anglos."

Two of every three Texas children are now non-Anglo and the trend line will become even more pronounced in the future, said Murdock, former U.S. Census Bureau director and now director of the Hobby Center for the Study of Texas at Rice University.

Today's Texas population can be divided into two groups, he said. One is an old and aging Anglo and the other is young and minority. Between 2000 and 2040, the state's public school enrollment will see a 15 percent decline in Anglo children while Hispanic children will make up a 213 percent increase, he said.

The state's largest county - Harris - will shed Anglos throughout the coming decades. By 2040, Harris County will have about 516, 000 fewer Anglos than lived in the Houston area in 2000, while the number of Hispanics will increase by 2.5 million during the same period, Murdock said. The projection assumes a net migration rate equal to one-half of 1990-2000.

Most of the state's population growth is natural, Murdock told the House Mexican American Legislative Caucus today. About 22 percent of the growth comes from people moving to Texas from other states.

About 6 percent of the state's population is not documented, he said.

B y 2040, only 20 percent of the state's public school enrollment will be Anglo, he said. Last year, non-Hispanic white children made up 33.3 percent of the state's 4.8 million public school enrollment.

Of the state's 254 counties, 79 recorded declining population during the past 20 years. All are rural. An additional 30 Texas counties, he said, would have also lost population had they not experienced Hispanic growth.

The state's future looks bleak assuming the current trend line does not change because education and income levels for Hispanics lag considerably behind Anglos, he said.

Unless the trend line changes, 30 percent of the state's labor force will not have even a high school diploma by 2040, he said. And the average household income will be about $6,500 lower than it was in 2000. That figure is not inflation adjusted so it will be worse than what it sounds.

"It's a terrible situation that you are in. I am worried," Murdock said.

Texans seem to want to fool themselves that their pro-business economic climate and abundant land mean that everything is alright. Politically, California is in many ways the opposite of Texas, with high taxes, and anti-business climate - but also with a fair amount of land - yet "Anglos" are on their way to becoming a minority here. As the demographer says, he's "worried" that, leaving aside everything else, 30% of the labor force won't even have a high school diploma.

Sounds to me like Texas needs House White American Caucus pronto. For all the good it would do; they'd probably spend most of their time proclaiming their love of diversity and/or apologizing for the Alamo.

I don't think it will fall by that much, though I must admit I haven't done the math.

Generally I do believe the US as a whole will suffers a smaller drop in real income due to changing demographics.

By 2050 the US per capita GDP will have declined, because of third-world immigration, to 86.8% of its 2004 value.

I'm a believer in technological progress so I'm a bit more optimistic, I think the number will be closer to 90% of its 2004 value.

Even if you make racist assumptions, the racial gap in personal income isn't that big in the US.

You can see whites who work full time only make ~25% more than blacks. Their median income is ~50% higher than that of hispanics. There's no way a demographic shift would have a bigger impact over the next several decades than gains in productivity from technology.

He is arguing that per-capita wealth will fall, and that if current education trends continue that Hispanics will continue to be far less educated than the population as a whole. They could of course get more pro education in the next 40 years and do something about it, but that can not be predicted whereas he can make assumptions about continuing existing trends.

But the immigrants are lower class. I think Mexico can reach an IQ in the low 90s (comparable to that of Greece) so this isn't really about unconquerable genetic group differences, but the problems are:

a) Welfare and American culture means that second and third generation Mexicans don't form nuclear families thus under-performing first generation immigrants by a wide margin
b) Like you said immigrants are the poorest of the poor, Much like the Turks in Germany aren't representative of Turks in general and the consequences of this are similar to the consequences for Germany talked about by Thilo Sarrazini
c) They will continue to vote to expand welfare
d) The country they are immigrating from is right next door, cultural links are easier to maintain.
Some of them carry irredentist (as well as racist) fantasies hostile to the US.

You guys need to get over your race obsession, the exact same problems would be present if Mexico was a huge underdeveloped (very much White) Sicily.

But wouldn't it be wiser to try and figure out how to change unfortunate trends rather than simply hope they will change?

I'm not saying you guys have to limit immigration or even opposing the inevitable amnesty of millions of illegals, I am however saying your current attempts to uplift the Hispanic minority have been absolute failures considering the amount of resources expended.

Wouldn't it be better to keep an open mind, discuss and try figure out how to improve the situation?
