  • I am honestly a bit at a loss here. I would normally not say anything, but the reason my settler was unescorted was because of the game pause.

If you check the log you will see that I missed a turn. This was after the several days long game pause. I was away a few hours, lost the turn and because of it was unable to hook up my settler and warrior which Spain can confirm was right next to my settler. The warrior was keeping lookout while the settler was moving out of my borders and they were going to join up in the turn I lost. I would have been able to see the warrior and react if I had not missed the turn...

Normally I would know when the turns ended, but because of the pause I did not check the log as regularly as I normally would. In effect, Spain double moved, as I would have spotted his warrior and been able to move if I hadn't missed the turn, but on the other hand, it is not his fault that I couldn't log in between turn 2825 and 2800...

    • to spain for raising the question herself about the settler attack.

I would agree with RP - this wouldn't fit with my sense of what is appropriate. To me it falls into the category of crippling a neighbour. Good tactic early game in SP, or MP, but not on for Diplo when we want everyone to start at least reasonably. Losing your first settler is a huge loss - the same as your second city being raised, which has been fairly soundly criticised in the past.

Also, not wanting to criticise Spain, the approach of 'I saw the unescorted settler and so attacked it' seems too separated from diplo and role playing to me. Was this a 'spanish' thing to do? In keeping with the spanish nation's character? OK, lets not be pompous, lots of us take opportunities and then define our nation's character accordingly (while others like RP plan the whole of history before they start!), but in which case I would at least have hoped this attack is also connected to messages from Spain to France, and will be in keeping with the spanish character from now on.

So for both reasons for me this seems to cross from diplo to standard MP, but its tricky because people shouldn't be able to take silly risks and then appeal to these sort of factors (but obviously have more sympathy with france because of his explanation that he hasn't really taken silly risks).

      • Since this is a diplo-game light I am not actually protesting the activity itself.

However the circumstances in which they happened are a bit unfortunate. the settler would not have been unescorted after it left the tile next to my cultural border if I hadn't missed the turn. And I would not have missed the turn if not the regular flow of the game had been halted so long because of Bulgaria's technical problems...

I would of course not mind a reload, what about the rest of the world?

        • I support the reload, though we are supposedly playing without double move rules (I'm curious how it would turn out). In any case "in diplo spirit" I'd at least give back the worker since we should not cripple civs neither early nor late game (except after 1000 ad if I understand it right )

          • without double move rules? really? wow, did not catch that...

            • We are playing with a code of honour.
There is officially no rule, but let's just all try to have a nice game.

The original idea behind these diplo-light games is that it's in the spirit of diplogaming. Not just playing only to win, but also to have a good time together and play civ a bit more then just bits and bites. (while we of course all still want to win)
But it's light, as in: no story telling (less time consuming), and light as in: less official rules, so no reloading and pausing, etc. etc.

              • @ india, in case you misunderstand, double-moving is still wrong, its just that we don't do it because its unfair, rather than because its against some rule and attracts a certain penalty

@rp, 'no pausing' a little ironic given the last few days?

                • My settler is walking around undefended. Don't attack it. The gods will be angry at you and your cows will deliver sour milk. (please let not any yogurt fan walk into my settler now)

                  • We always say that we play these diplolight games w/o pause, reload, double-move rule etc, but in the end we play them just like regular diplo-games and people are quite upset when someone double move against them. I never mind reloading if "not reloading the game" makes it less fun.

                    • ok glad to hear some opinions here, although i think it's better that we have a strict rule that describes that war is a no go until a certain year. I played the way I always played, whether it's against AI or human players. That settler was just a sitting duck just begging to pick off.
For this game; I want everybody to have a good time. I just played my turn the normal way. I checked if i had the option to make peace with france but only cease fire and i'm not sure if i can give back the worker (the former settler) back to france then the next turn. I'm okay with a roll back so france still has his settler and i'll leave him pass unhindered and play pacifistic style.
For me it's the first time I plav pitboss diplo-style (been playing PBEM before) and I don't want to spoil the show for the other players.

After all; it's more about playing the game than winning the game :-)

                      • One doesn't have to be pacifist, but it's good to have a diplo reason for going war. When we are at war or about to declare war we should check the turn order and not make double moves unless unavoidable.
Anyway: if you choose to roll back you can use my login save from previous turn.

                        • Reload is fine, as that's a fairly bad thing to happen in a diplo game.

                          Someone say yogurt?

                            • Since most of us agree let's just reload if we still can. It would be bad to let France lose his settlers for something that's not his fault.
