That sounds as complicated as buying a washing machine.![]()

Christ, I just wanted to find a nice 47" local dimming LED and I ended up spending a couple hours reading about Google TV, Apple TV, Hulu Plus, Netflix vs Hulu Plus, Netflix + Hulu Plus vs cable, etc. I didn't even start on Boxee, Vudu, and some other **** I'd never heard of.

This thread is clearly an invitation for Asher to drop some opinionated science on us all. I even mentioned Apple TV and Boxee, just to make sure.

Oooh, yes.
I think you going to find out rather a lot.
I remember seeing his thread about his home theatre. Streaming stuff from the internet etc etc etc. I didn't read much of it, too technical and detailed for me.

So what specifically are you looking for more detail on?
I can't be too helpful since Hulu, Vudu, etc aren't available in Canada so I've no experience with them. The TV companies seem to prefer I pirate.
From what I've heard, Google TV isn't ready for primetime and is overly complicated. AppleTV is way too restrictive.
You're probably best off getting a nice TV set (LED with local dimming is definitely awesome) and sticking with cable/satellite until the alternatives mature a bit more.
Boxee is supposed to support all of Netflix, Hulu, Vudu, etc. in addition to tons of other smalltime "internet apps" (ted.com, theonion, youtube, etc) as well as local network streaming. But the software is still quite buggy.

That's the plan. I was trying to decide whether to buy now or wait a few months for the 2011 models to come out, which got me reading about Vizio's new local dimming LEDs and Google TV models, which led me down the rabbit hole.

I haven't had cable/satellite in years, as I don't watch enough TV to justify the cost. Was hoping Netflix + Hulu Plus might offer a cheap cable alternative (sans sports), but that seems like it's still a few years off.

Just found out that Community isn't available on Hulu Plus. **** that.![]()

That's the problem. Right now it's a crapshoot if your shows are on there. If you're in Canada it's even worse. We don't get Hulu or Vudu, and Netflix has about 10% of the content as the US one for the same price.![]()

Yeah, but you do have legal piracy.
Anyway, while it sucks that available content isn't keeping up with the technology, I'm not optimistic that things will change rapidly. Cable companies are a powerful interest group and they surely aren't going to let streaming video options take over the market without a fight.

Bingo.
We need anti-cartel action. Mainstream service is capped at 30GB. 60GB is a "luxury" service. At 100GB they call it Ferrari.![]()
