My venerable GeForce 8800 must've given up the ghost. Yesterday it took it 30 minutes, today - only one to display some brightly colored moire for a second over my desktop and stop displaying anything. Today even the BIOS setup had a grid of black rectangles after I rebooted.
I doubt it's my display. I doubt it's the DVI cable. So I think it's my GPU. It's been 3.5 years since I last upgraded my PC, so I have no idea if modern GPUs will work with my motherboard.
I bought my MB, RAM and CPU from a guy that I suspect was a fence, so they came with no boxes or manuals. I remember that it's an EVGA MB with an LGA775 CPU slot and an nForce chipset. It might be EVGA 680i SLI, so it has 2 PCIe x16 slots.
Are modern GPUs compatible with it? What is the best GPU for 300$ or so?

It works, but I haven't noticed a huge performance gain. I guess I need more RAM.

CPU is Core 2 Extreme X6800
I have 2 1GB sticks of some Patriot RAM that was almost top of the line 3.5 years ago. No way I'll remember the frequency or other stuff.
