  • Where do I prioritize gold/research

Just started the game from Steam and I'm in information overload mode right now.

Is there sliders to change priority to research or gold production, or am I stuck at whatever values I can get out of my city tiles. Is the only way to give research priority to change city tiles?

My playstyle have always been to give maximum priority to research as early as possible.

Can't adjust it manually. Basically you have to think ahead and make adjustments based on what you build. If you want more research, build more libraries (or more population). For money, build trading posts with the workers. For happiness, build colosseums. Whatever you are building, be wary of maintenance. Not only do building maintenance costs add up, but unit maintenance increases over time. Any unit (workers and military) might only cost 1 per turn at the beginning, but the cost will raise over time and by the time you hit the industrial age the same unit will cost 6 or 8 gold per turn.

It's pretty tricky overall. There's a pretty informative thread on it here.

The overall economy is a LOT different than IV, and I still haven't properly adapted my basic strategy... there are a lot of changes in V, but I think the new economy is a real interesting improvement.

In addition to city focus, you can control what to research and build in the cities. Markets or Libraries? Also, there is direct way to exchange gold to research through research agreement. Consider this the same as slider, only related to diplomacy. And yes, try babylonians, they are gods in research.

I forgot to mention you can also make tweaks by using specialists in your cities. This really helps when you have solid populations, it's saved my bacon a few times.

There also is possible to choose to "build" wealth and science in the cities, but I wouldn't recommend it as they give too little.

Yeah... the build wealth and science options pretty much suck. They add so little, it's not really worth unless you don't want to build anything else at the moment. You can see some big differences by selecting what your city focuses on, but overall, once you get used to it, you can pick the tiles you want to work to meet your goals.

I'm learning that you need to build a lot of trading posts, especially as you approach the industrial area. It's too bad I can't seem to remember to build them before my economy collapses, but at least they help dig me out of a hole.

You absolutely can't build every building in every city like in previous games. I've tried building cultural and science buildings in every city and I do OK, and of course financial which are free, but if I add in any military it quickly adds up (esp those with 3+ maint) and I only build enough happiness buildings to keep positive overall.

It's a pretty tough balancing act.

It is funny but I think worker's AI recognizes that. In my recent game around turn 130 my economy collapsed to -5g/turn (and thanks to no slider that creates a challenge). So I noticed that the workers themselves immediately started building trading posts. (I had 3 of them and all 3 did that. More over, before that it was only mines and farms on similar hexes)

Yes, I also noticed that the Ottomans were on my border, and they built TPs in almost every tile in their cities. I thought they were frickin crazy, and then I noticed that they had 20000 gold. Sure they had a ton of cities (and they're AI) but still... obviously my farm-heavy strategy will require some retooling, especially in Renaissance times.

They must go for unannounced secret financial victory - accumulate 100000 gold to win

I didn't see this mentioned, but to the OP: On the city screen, the right hand side has some menus that you can expand. The top one controls the tile emphasis for the city, and you can click "Gold" or "Production" or "Food" or whatever, and the game will automatically optimize both tile working AND specialists in buildings for said production desire.

Sounds ripe for extorting their gold out of them through violence

Unfortunately, Snotty, they also had a giant army versus my small one.

I had one of those "People Who Love Pointy Sticks" things pop up, and the Ottomans were on top with a score of 25000 or so. My score was 1400 I believe. I don't understand why they left me alone, other than that I had been friendly to them the whole game.

Once I saw that, by the way, I decided it was time to throw in the towel.
