The Asus is cheaper and comes with real video memory. The Mac looks a bit better and is available with a French Canadian keyboard layout, but shared video memory sucks.

Here's a fun fact about Macs working out of the box.
I found a box of Apple Remotes in the Computer Systems Lab at school the other day. There's this Mac craze that's been going around the non-CS people at TJ, and since they "work out of the box" they never change the settings for the remote. I spent History class the other day ****ing with the class dickhead's laptop and he rebooted it twice trying to fix it. I think he eventually figured it out, I should have been trickier like stopping when he opened the control panel. Oh well.
Anyways, the lesson is that nothing actually works out of the box.

In the end, it was Apple's implementation of the Canadian French keyboard that motivated my decision - they use a special layout that is most excellent. The vast majority of laptops on the market aren't even available in French, let alone the special Mac layout.
Talking with people around me, it turns out I'm not the only one who for whom that was a major purchasing factor. Barring that, I would have been more than happy to get the Asus, more powerful and $250 cheaper.

yeah that's a brilliant idea! I can picture kids with unsupervised laptops really learning in school
In my day, if a kid took out a cellphone during class, it was immediately confiscated. Laptops were flat out not allowed though I never saw anyone even think to bring one in. This was the early 2000's so laptops were not very common and no high school kid would ever have one so it never was an actual issue but it's such an obvious distraction.
To be fair, I think the original knock on cellphones/beepers/pagers had more to do with it being associated with drug dealing than on it being a distraction... by my day, though, it was more an issue of it being a distraction. Calls during class... texting during class...
The things you can do with a laptop make the possibility of texting during class seem like nothing.
I've seen college professors ban laptops from their lectures. I can't imagine high school kids having access to them in class!

Every brand except Dell is manufactured in China. They all suck.
Besides the point of this laptop is graduate studies. The keyboard quality and layout is a major concern.

Almost all the upperclassmen have laptops.
The kids that don't pay attention fail the class, except for the kids who already know the stuff and are just taking the class because they have to. Most of the rest of us are smart enough to be able to see the connection.
