NFL - Are You Ready For Some Football?! - Off Season

We need a new thread now.

    Continued from:

Vikings passing game was anemic. 171 yards for Brett Favre.

Is it just me or did Peterson have the quietest 19 carry game of his carreer? I can't understand why with a depleted receiving corp they didn't go to him more.

Saints D was pretty stiff all night. Didn't allow the Vikings past the half until just before halftime.

So much for me telling my friends to take the Saints and the over... definitely did not expect 14-9 from that game! Are the Vikings D that good, or the Saints O that tired?

Does Chilly not have balls to tell Favre to hand the ball off to AP?

I think he just looks up at Favre to tell him, and gets lost in a Wrangler commercial.

I don't think he fumbled. That's a streak of one.

Both offenses were very imbalanced. The Saints didn't run in the first half then did almost nothing but run in the second half.

We were atrocious and deserved to have lost by more. The fact that we still had a great chance of winning it after they missed the field goal attempt in the 4th is just silly.

Rice can't come back early enough. I can definitely understand why Favre, who had a shocker apart from the touchdown pass, didn't just keep giving AP the ball in the second half - that's all he did for the whole of the first, but it seems that he didn't trust any of the other options enough to give the Saints' D a genuine doubt as to where the ball was going each play. The whole side looked completely one-dimensional on offence.

As for all the stupid fouls we gave away....

Having said that, I thought Porter was great again, both attacking the ball and intelligently attacking space to reduce Favre's options.

Favre only trusts Shank, it seems. This is a reason why his whole not wanting to do training camp did the Vikings a disservice. Favre should have worked something out where he could have done just enough time in camp to establish a rhythm with the receivers. That's really what missing camp does... it hurts the young guys who need to get some reps with their QB.

I would also like it if Brees stopped doing his 'Kill' plays quite so often. In the second half it seemed like he'd shout 'Kill' before every single snap....

Pick play, get ball, throw ball or give to runner. Maybe I'm too much of a traditionalist, but it's not clever to have one dumb gimmick and repeat it ad infinitum.

He's calling an audible when he does that. What's wrong with that? Apparently, the Vikes had paid attention to game tape and were coming out in the right sets and Brees didn't like it. Why would he run a play if the defense is set to stop it? He had better audible!

(of course, he could just have been ****ing with the Vikings D; making them think he read their defense and audibled out of it so that the Vikings would then have to adjust, etc. such is the mindgame/chess of football)

And you must really hate Peyton Manning then

No, audibles are great, but having the same one ('Kill') and doing it over and over again smacks of strategic incompetence, something I'd never usually accuse Brees of.

Maybe he had a headache and couldn't remember any other audible signals.

For the Cowboys, when Romo says "kill kill kill" he is signaling the team to run the second play called in the huddle instead of the first play called in the huddle, so he isn't signaling the same play ever time he uses "kill." It is probably the same for the Saints.

Yea, it's the same for the Saints. Sean Payton (who worked for Dallas in the past) calls two plays that Brees relays in the huddle. "Kill" signals the second play called.

This system sort of works better than the audible system because it doesn't give away any secret codes like "Pistol", "Omaha", "Red 1-80" or whatever...

Yes, Chris Collinsworth even talked about it in the broadcast... Kill means go to the second play called in the huddle.

Considering that he did it so much though, I wouldn't be surprised if some of them were 'false' Kills to trick the defense into adjusting.

I always found it hilarious when certain commentators (like Collinsworth) would give away a team's audible code by saying what they mean like literally saying there's that call again. When the quarterback says such and such, it means the receiver will go into a slant.

I doubt that Collinsworth is giving away anything that the opposing coaches don't already know. They seem to generally be on top of things as much as a commentator.

Giants look like last year... no running game but pass, pass, pass. And a lot of ugly deflections. Both Eli's INT's came off of deflections.

Also, great game so far for the Titans' Vince Young.

Seriously, I must have some sort of mental illness. Every year, EVERY YEAR, some tiny little spark in my brain says, "Maybe, just maybe, if the o-line comes together, and the defense can avoid giving up the big play, and they can avoid turnovers, this good be a great year! After all, the Saints won it!"

And then, BOOM. First ****ing half of the first ****ing game, lights out.

Our backup QB is Shaun mother****ing Hill? Who the **** is that? Who thought that was a good ****ing idea?

We're playing Shaun ****ing Hill. If you guys do lose, frankly, the entire Bears franchise ought to disband.
