Armed US 'Bin Laden hunter' is held in Pakistan

An American man who claimed to be on a mission to hunt down Osama Bin Laden has been arrested in northern Pakistan, police say.

They said that Gary Brooks Faulkner, 52, was detained in the mountains of Chitral district north of Peshawar.

He had a pistol, dagger and a sword and was carrying night-vision equipment as well as Christian literature.

Police say Mr Faulkner was stopped near the border with Afghanistan's Nuristan province, a known Taliban stronghold.

They say he told investigators after his arrest late on Sunday that he was on a solo mission to kill Osama Bin Laden who is thought to be hiding in the mountainous Afghan-Pakistan border area.

The al-Qaeda leader is the world's most-wanted man, with the US offering a reward of up to $25m (£17m) for information leading to his capture.

    'God is with me'

Police say Mr Faulkner, who is from California, arrived as a tourist in Chitral on 2 June and was assigned a security escort before vanishing on Monday evening.

A search was then launched and he was found in a forest a few miles from the Afghan border.

"We have interrogated him and he has told us that he was on his way to Afghanistan to capture and kill Bin Laden," Mumtaz Ahmed, a senior police official in Chitral told the BBC.

"We arrested him in the Bamburat valley close to the border with Nuristan province of Afghanistan."

Police say that their suspicions grew when officers seized the pistol, the sword and night-vision equipment.

Mr Faulkner is now being questioned by intelligence officials in Peshawar, the main city in north-western Pakistan.

He has told police he visited Pakistan seven times, and this was his third trip to Chitral.

Police say that Mr Faulkner was also carrying a book containing Christian verses and teachings.

Asked if he felt he had a chance of tracing Bin Laden, he told police, "God is with me, and I am confident I will be successful in killing him," the Associated Press reports.

The US embassy in Pakistan confirmed that a US citizen had been arrested and said it was seeking access to him.

Correspondents say that the Chitral area is widely seen as having escaped much of the violence that has blighted the rest of north-west Pakistan.

In April a Greek man who worked in one of the few museums in the area was released by the Taliban after being held by them for eight months.

Bin Laden has evaded a huge US effort to capture him since the attacks on the US of 11 September 2001 for which he is blamed.

Chitral - because of its close proximity to Nuristan - is considered to be one of his possible hiding places.
Is it me, or is MOBIUS a horrible person?

    You stole my thread.

    I couldn't decide on a thread title.

Sloww, no one is suggesting this guy is representative of all Christians. Or, for that matter, of all nutjobs. He is clearly walking down his own path.

But I do wonder at the assumption that his god is fine with premeditated murder, under the right conditions. The Ten Commandments do not AFAIK include dispensations for situational ethics.

It's pretty stupid for a white guy who doesn't speak the local language to go into lawless areas ruled by Islamic militants. He should feel thankful the Pakistani central government got to him first rather then the Islamic fundamentalists who control 1/3 to 1/2 of the country. The reality is he stuck out like a sore thumb and to really move around with easy you need a local pakistani. To bad Pakistan's government continues to play a double game of supporting the Taliban materially and then giving lip service to the US.

Just cleans the place with fire. It's the only decent thing to do given the locals are die hard Islamists who support terrorism even if a few support the government before they support terrorism. As long as Pakistan exists it will support terrorism against the west and India so just nuke the **** out of them and leave no valley left inhabitable. See how many of them praise Allah after 99% of them are dead. The British should have done this rather then fighting an 80 year war with the local Islamic extremists. There is no rehabilitating them so just nuke them (poison gas and biological weapons work just as well) and be done with the ****s once and for all. The ****nut who wants to plan an attack would find the other 99% if the population takes arms against him to prevent the poison gas attack which would kill everyone in town. The RAF had it right.

The big problem with the west is we're to ***** to deal with the obvious like out ancestors did. A mountain of dead terrorist supporters would speak to our strength and tell them to stop being terrorists or they and everyone they know will die. Its a shame the US didn't treat Iraq like the RAF did and just spray chemical weapons over every town where an Allied soldier was injured. Just like in 1920 you'd find Iraqis totally unwilling to fight the west because they'd fear every single person in the town being killed if one idiot took up arms and as a result they'd police their own.

I suppose he didn't know Pashto or anything... pretty retarded then. I don't see why he thought he could do something that the US military and CIA still haven't been able to do.

Oerdin, was that another drunk post? Because this is the second time that I've seen you basically say slaughter people. Last time, it was by the dozens... this time, by the tens of millions. Are you serious? The stuff you say sounds crazy and evil.

I think Oerdin's getting jealous of all the attention Ben gets.

-Jrabbit, just so you know, the commandment is best translated "thou shalt not murder," not "thou shalt not kill." The OT calls for criminals of various kinds--pretty much all kinds, actually--to be killed for their infractions, and despite George Carlin's stupid attempt at cleverness it really was not a contradiction. The commandment is only literally broken when human life is taken without divine/societal sanction. Now, this fellow was a Christian, and we're supposed to be about forgiveness, so he's pretty clean wrong on that score, but I think the OT would be fine with hunting down and killing someone for killing thousands of people and not being Jewish while he did it.
