Before looking at the links:
I'm not sure I'm ready for CV yet. I've only recently gotten to the point where I occasionally take a week off from playing civ mid-game (I usually take a week off BETWEEN my 50-100+ hour games). With Hephmod and my additional xml modding, I am rather satisfied.
Post link: Not much info yet. Of course, hexagons are great, but I'm sure I'll need at least a new graphics card.
A game CAN be realistic AND fun and replayable. It just takes more work on the game designers' part.

Great news.
I liked this, from the IGN link:
war feels "more massive" and includes ranged bombardment from behind front lines.

RIP lest we forget... SG (2) and LaFayette -- Civ2 Succession Games Brothers-in-Arms

If it is a return to civ 3 bombardment, it is already broken. Trip knows about how that is broken, so hopefully he has a method of fixing it. I know of a couple, but they aren't straight forward so probably wouldn't be acceptable in Firaxian eyes.
You just wasted six ... no, seven ... seconds of your life reading this sentence.
The Danish magazine article that had the honour of being the first to announce Civ V apparently said that the new combat system was somewhat similar to the one in panzer general, and that there was a limit of one unit per tile. That being the case, a civ3 style artillery might not be broken, because you simple won't be able to get that many bombard units in range of a target.

Well, that's going to be intriguing. One unit per tile though...reserving judgement, but that's going to mean one difficult combat system to balance. I wonder what happens if you have a unit in a city and you make new one? And boats for that matter. And thinking about that AU game, give peace a chance...perhaps that is a mistranslation, and you can make armies from multiple units?
I think Dales army mod might be a major source of inspiration if this is the case. I hope there is a demo out sometime soon.

Limit of one unit per tile should be really interesting. It takes a bit of the strategy out when you just build an SoD and kill everything in sight.

Wait and see. It's incredibly easy for a limit of 1 unit/tile to limit the game strategically as well. There will likely be a lot of background rules that need to be in place to make such a system viable.
We shouldn't really read too much into anything right now. The game likely won't go into lock down until June/July at the earliest, so anything in place right now could still change.

It could be that the "unit" is just an army that is fed by adding personnel and equipment. I wonder if they still have Diodorus Sicilius's notes on command structure and technology.
My guess is a battle screen with CtP2 or MOM style engagements.

That would be my guess. I'm pretty sure that was what Dale did in his mod for CIV though, so it would provide some basis of understanding. It has probably evolved beyond that though.
Did those work in PBEM? Because any combat system they have has to be turn based to fit in with the PBEM construct. My guess is a battle screen with CtP2 or MOM style engagements.

I hope they go past the modern era this time.
I hate playing through the game and be disappointed when there are no future units.

My identity is of no consequence save for the epitath of your grave.

Did you get BTS? BTS had a mod that played like normal from ancient through modern, and then added a whole new age with new techs, units, buildings, etc afterwards. That is pretty much exactly what you want.
I never tried it though since I never cared much for the modern age anyhow, and generally get bored by that point. But I hear it is good.

I don't entirely understand the benefits of hexes.

Ozzy, one thing about hexes is you won't be using the diagonal just to move 'faster' or 'farther' with your unit. Early commercial board wargames (e.g., Tactics II from Avalon Hill, 1960's) used squares. Later everyone was using hexes for any halfway 'serious' game or simulation.
You'll appreciate it, I am sure.

Hmmm... Tactics II. One of the first war games I ever played.
