    Question Car GPS systems

I'm planning on buying one. Anyone have any experience/recommendations?

I was about to get a Garmin nüvi 255w, but then I found out that it doesn't have a lane assist function. The Garmin nüvi 1350 has lane assist, but that's really the only difference between it and the 255w, besides the $100 price difference. Not sure it's worth the extra money. I'm hoping there's a model (non-Garmin, maybe?) that offers lane assist at a pricepoint closer to the 255w.

It looks pretty good. I have a lowrance iWay 500C (which appears to have doubled in price since I bought it ). I've used three other GPS's (2 unknown brands and my phone GPS). All have much smaller screens than mine (5") so I can definitely say that the bigger screens are well worth the money. They were also much less physically 'substantial' than mine. That may be a plus if you need to carry it around but mine is gonna last a lot longer. It was originally designed for marine navi so its a waterproof/resistant sealed metal unit. That can be a factor when you're getting to your car or moving it from the trunk in bad weather (I never leave mine in the front of the car, it makes it a break-in target).

    Other points to consider

How easy can you pinpoint locations rather than just addresses? I've often used mine just like a map to find places that I dont know the address for then told the GPS to "go there" (one area where the larger screens are definitely better).

The lane navi feature will only be as good as the speed of location processing.

How fast does it re-calculate routes when you've made the wrong turn.

How do you update maps and other software? Mine connects to a PC via a USP cable so I get my updates for "free"

How much is an antenna? They can be useful if you want to have the unit lower in your car than the windshield.

I can't believe the number of people that have trouble finding their way.

    Shameful really.
