I got a message that AVG 7.5 will no longer be supported and I'm told that 8.5 isn't as good or loses some features. Is this true and if so what is a good alternative?

Good alternative #1: Don't surf in such a way as you might get a virus.
Good alternative #2: Avast! (but you have to figure out how to get their 'home edition', that can be fun; they try very hard to give you their non-free version. http://www.avast.com/eng/download-avast-home.html I think is the correct link.

I just updated AVG and I imagine it will be fine; but as snoopy said, curb your habits.

I would scrap AVG, it frakked up my computer after a while of use of the new version. Avast works wonderful.

seems like it's still being updated, but won't work with my unauthorized copy of windows.

AVG is good, but 8.5 got kinda bulky.
I use Avira AntiVir and it's quite good
I couldn't get zone alarm to install either (it would get hung up when downloading from their server).
I'm using something called PC tools firewall with threatfire- which says it's an antivirus protections system too. Although it seems more like a spyware/malware program. I'm not really sure.
someone (Snoopy?) here recommended me malwarebytes a few months ago and it works great. I'll get nasty stuff but the malware program removes it fine. But I have AVG and I was getting messages a while back that the free version would no longer be updated but my AVG seems to update nonetheless, so I dont whats going on.

I started running AVast on my secondary PC about a month ago, and I'm pleased with it too. Two gripes only: how slow it scans, and secondarily it's unorthodox interface (though the latter seems to diminish with experience using the product).

ok, I just scanned with my Malwarebytes and Avira was activated to scan along with it I think, the Malware scan kept stopping (3-4 times) and Avira would pop up to announce a trojan was found.
did you get rid of it?

My avg just gave me another 15 days to upgrade the free version, so I went and tried and found out my avast wont let the avg upgrade - virus protection wars
