I remember not playing this game. It was a harrowing journey of actually going to my job and working, while also trying to keep my wife happy through various baubles and sexual favors, plus I had to take the dog outside when it was 40 below zero.

Marathon, the reason my friends and I have been playing the same hotseat game since 2006...

I was pretty excited when I saw the map script and leader I was playing. I play about half my casual games on the Big and Small script. Joao has perfect traits and start techs for rapid expansion.

I was disapointed with the start area, having to move to get coastal access. Also, the lack of forest put a damper on my dreams of rapid expansion. The first hut gave me a map of what was west of my start. So, eastward my warrior traveled. The lack of contact and the emerging long skinny island-look of the land, told me I got the shaft and was on one of the small continents.

As I have played this script many times, I understood that my best hope for victory would be a cultural victory. Spaceship and Diplomatic were possible, but not knowing who my adversaries were I couldn't risk not going cultural early. I later found out that Diplomatic would have been a no-go as Zara Yaqob usually blocks my attempts at that with his hugh size and population. I hadn't done much resaerch after I got infantry, so I have no idea if I had the resources for a spaceship win.

I raced to music and drama, to get my great artist production line started. I even managed to get Confucianism. I picked up as many culture generating wonders in my three target cities, also using a couple great artists to bump up the rate of my second and third city. I made contact with the first civs on the big continent. I was relieved to find most were expansionist leaders with only Hannibal and Ragnar being threats to invade me. Getting open borders with everyone, I had most of the religions jump over to me which enabled me to get 4-5 cathedrals in each of my culture cities.

Towards the end, Hannibal and Ragnar did finally invade taking my eastern science city, despite having 6 infantry in it. Luckily for me the city cost them just about their entire invasion force and they eventually tired of war. The funny part was Zara called a UN vote that gave the city back,a few turns after I got peace. I then cruised to the cultural victory.
