The law is the law, and what the kids did was illegal. And yes, that's crazy. On the other hand, if the state were to make exceptions for self-produced child porn (although, teens are not children), it would be exploited by peddlers of teen porn.
Also, the principal did not illegally go through the phones. As previously mentioned, schools have parental rights over children, and kids in school have no 4th Amendment protections.
What's even crazier is that the age of consent in Pennsylvania is 16, but 16 and 17 year-olds cannot take nude pictures of themselves. Granted, the girls in this case were under the age of consent, but what I wrote points to the arbitrary and haphazard state of the law.
The kids should go for a jury trial and try and have the jury nullify.
