Thinking about giving up meat

I'm tired of getting food poisoning from meat. Just came off a bout last week. Though it might have been something I got from my brother as he had it too. And meat is kind of icky when you think about it.

2 things steering me away right now. One is meat tastes good. Two is I have enough trouble getting enough protein as it is. Esp. as I started working out again, I need the protein. I don't eat that much meat right now because I'm concerned about heart disease and cholesterol. But the meat I do eat I need for protein (and to fill me up).

But how do you get protein without eating meat? (I can't eat much dairy either). I find I still tend to get too much protein from sugar sources. Not good as I'm concerned about getting diabetes. But I tend to eat too much yogurt and peanut butter for protein as it tastes good. I just don't think I can eat that much sugar and be healthy. So what ways of getting protein are there that taste good besides meat?

I got a bad case of food poising from a salad wrap with no meat in it. You can easily get food poisoning from veggies and fruits.

I've had food poisoning twice, and both times it was because of meatless salads.

Getting protein as a vegetarian isn't too hard: Soy products (tofu, fake meat like Morning Star Farms), eggs, beans, and nuts, if you want to limit dairy.

The hard thing is to avoid over-eating carbs, as vegetarians tend to compensate for not eating meat by eating more carbs like pasta, rice, etc.

I've been lucky enough to never have gotten food poisoning which is bizarre given how I'll eat food from street vendors and other high risk places other people avoid.

I've been making deer jerky. Friends have been killing them around here left and right. I love jerky, and how it makes my basement smell when I'm making it.

Beaver is sweet and has its own natural sauce, I could eat Beaver pelt, Beaver Patties,Beaver tail, Beaver Butt,Beaver open on a half shell, open faced Beaver, chipped cream on Beaver tail, dang, Boiled Beaver, I could skew me some Beaver and slowly pick it apart with me teeth, Beaver on stick tastes hawt, little salty but the taste goes down well with a sort of creme holandaise sauce..so many delectable ways to treat oneself to Beaver, heck, Beaver Burgers, with or with out the husk on it

Dis, I know you're hurting in this economy, but have you considered moving from grade F meat to E or above? Also, I understand cooking helps.

You don't need as much as they say (50g, most people are fine on 40g). It is true, however, that some people over compensate with rice/pasta. If you do lift weights, and want to consume greater amounts (100+g) then it is more difficult if you don't want to consume soy.

Milk
Yogurt (you can get low sugar stuff)
Whey powder
Cottage cheese (standard cheeses are mostly fat)
Nuts
Peanut Butter
Fortified Foods (Pasta/Cereal and Protein Bars Mostly)
Bean Soups
Tofu
Veggie Meat
Soy Milk
Beans in Mexican
Beans in Indian
Beans in Med. East
Eggs (have pretty good cholesterol, and if you are easy on the cheese, exercise, and don't eat meat, you don't really have to worry about cholesterol anyways)
Fancy Veggie dishes (Generally you buy these or their recipes, they are generally bean based)

I don't think avoiding meat will give you better chances of avoiding food poisoning.

I've never gotten a food poisoning, but you can get it from any other thing just as easily. I guess it's weird, I eat all kinds of stuff, from the street with my hands even abroad in weird smelly places. I don't care. It tastes good. Just eat it. Wash your hands.

Don't do what Pekka does in Mexico. Or drink non-bottled water there either. Otherwise, you will get food poisoning and may get any number of illnesses and worms.

Venison, especially deer jerky. I love the stuff. I haven't stole any of this years hunt yet, though hopefully will when I'm back home over christmas. I do have some moose steak in the freezer that I'll have to pull out soon now that I've thought about it.

I could never go through with giving up meat, its just way too good.
