    CTP PBEM Challenges Awaiting Response
    -- None --

    The Rules:

    1. BAID represents the highest CTP solo artificial intelligence level ever defeated -- BEST ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE DEFEAT (without cheating, of course). This gives a rough indication of the player's level, and initially places players on the ladder somewhat fairly.

    2. Players alphabetically appear on the ladder in the "Alternate Players" section when they show an interest in being on the ladder. They will then appear on the official ladder once a previously announced (on this thread) game finishes.

    3. Ladder positions change when a player lower on the ladder defeats a player higher on the ladder. When a lower ladder player defeats a higher ladder player:
    3.1) the lower player takes over the ladder position of the higher player;
    3.2) the higher player moves down one slot on the ladder;
3.3) the lower player attains the BAID level of the higher player (if different).
3.4) Alternate players will appear at the bottom of the official ladder once they complete an official challenge match, unless they defeat an official ladder player -- in which case rules 3.1, 3.2, and 3.3 apply.

    4. There is no cheating or bug exploits allowed in CTP PBEM Challenges. Anyone caught cheating will be permanently banned from the CTP PBEM Challenge Ladder.

    Cheating in PBEM includes:
    a) Opening your opponents turns before the game ends.
    b) Replaying any turn.
    c) Using the "rush buy - then switch queue" bug exploit.
    d) Settling on top of a farm or mine.

    5. You may challenge any player any time. However, a player is "obliged" to accept your challenge if you are within three ladder spots of their position. If the person challenged dodges the challenge continually, with no good reason (posted here), then the one challenged may lose one or more positions on the ladder, or fall into the Alternate Players group. Remember to post your challenge, and the acceptance or declination of that challenge here on this thread.

    6. ** Rescinded **

    7. In PBEM Challenges, a player wins in the normal manner, but also wins if the player achieves a Power Graph (PG) rating four times their opponent's graph (4xPG), beyond the 20 turn mark, (except in the Dual-Duel format where it is recommended to use the standard victory conditions only -- see note 8).

    8. (Optional) The Dual-Duel format makes for a fair game. It completely equalizes the starting positions -- Two games started simultaneously on the same randomized map with starting positions swapped. First one to win a game wins the match. Use this format if you wish. If you do use this dual-duel format, it is recommended that you do NOT use the 4XPG (mentioned in note 7 above), victory condition because one civilization may have a much better starting position.

    9. Any player not responding to a direct challenge within two weeks will be dropped from the ladder. The challenged player does not necessarily need any excuse. He or she must simply "respond" here on this thread to either accept or decline. If the challenged player continually dodges the challenger(s) with excuses, then that challenged player may drop down the ladder depending upon the circumstances.

    10. Draws do not count for either a win or a loss for either player.

    11. Once a CTP PBEM Challenge Match is agreed upon by both players, then any absence from the game for over two weeks will result in a win for the present player and a loss for the absent player.

    Standard Challenge Match Settings:
(Players should agree which settings to use. These are the standard settings, but can be changed to suit the wishes of the players.)

    Map size: Huge -- Randomized
    Difficulty: Emperor
    Barbarians: Ruins Only
Ruins: Off Limits -- No Entry (to disable ruins on initial random map -- modify ctp_data/default/gamedata/const.txt file -- set RUINS_CHANCE_PER_BOX from 1.0 to 0.0)
    Wonders: No Wonders Allowed
    Earth World
    Bloodlust Off
    Pollution On
    Number of Civilizations: 4
(2 Human Players, 2 Computer Players)
    Map:
    Wet/Dry 20%
    Warm/Cold 20%
    Ocean/Land 50%
    Island/Continent 50%
    Uniform/Diverse 50%
    Few/Many Goods 50%
    One Settler (default)
    100 Gold (default)

Alright. The above is the latest from the good work that Addled Platypus and Mathemagician did in the past. I know there are some updates that are needed to the completed and in progress games.

However, the main thing we need to decide is at what time to begin calculating the rankings. I propose 1-January-2006. That is, we will start everybody "even" as of 1-Jan-2006 and then begin the rankings from that point forward. Players with no results since 1-Jan-2006 will fall off the ladder. This is just a suggestion. What do you all think? Other suggestions, of course, welcome.

    I have an update:

TheBirdMan def. quinns -- Nov 2007 on turn 160 ( Good match Max)

I think Bird posted this earlier, but I didn't find it.

If those of you that are interested in getting this going again could re-post your games that were not posted (see above completed games to see if it was), that would be great.

Both Milamber and Hatschy have "left" CTP.

    Hatschy posted it.

Milamber was very busy RL I know..... and finally he stopped playing.

i beat Cuaich in #160-- by the hair of my chinny chin chin. We have a rematch going that should be put up there as well as my match with quinn. We need to get yosemiteken/dancemasseuse on there too. Who else is really active? The only people I can think of are: me birdman, ricketyclick, Ken1, Ken2, quinn . . . anyone else? It may be a small ladder.

    Hows Vista and CTP?

    Just asking good folks....

The Happies did indeed beat me...much to my chagrin. We are currently on Turn 106 of the rematch, and I plan on dismantling him limb from limb.

I am also playing a game with Horned Frog (Ken Pierce)...not sure if he is on the ladder, but I think we talked about making it a ladder game. We started around July 21 I think.

Good to see we aren't dead yet! Anyone else up for a game?

    Count me in

This is all new to me being a newcomer, and I have a couple of questions and/or suggestions.

    1. Why not set up a scenario with the standard game in it and a fast start mod like Mod Lite?

    2. I have never played a solo game against an AI. Do I have to wait until its completed to join the Ladder?

3, This list seems to be really out of date with most not active. Is someone going to cull it before we start? How about everyone interested signing up and building a new ladder using old scores. New ones like me get one free chance starting off to challenge anyone on it.Or, start at the bottom and work your way up.

4.Who maintains the ladder/ That is, to whom do you report a win/loss and who updates the ladder?

Probably Quinns, maybe Keygen or even Maquiladora

Start with BAID (which you say you have never done, correct?)

I would imagine you could just offer a challenge, and start at bottom of list

Seems to me, no more than 2 spots above where your position is was the rule

Of course, the persons in charge could take into consideration activity as a minimum criteria

    Hope this helps

I think there are recommended starting conditions, but nobody is held to it because it's fun to mix things up. You can use a quick start mod or not--whatever you choose as long as you both agree. In the current match I have with Cuaich we each control two civs and there are no AI. In our last match we each controlled one civ and there were two AI civs. Variety is the spice of life! In my opinion, you can challenge whoever you want, but those more than a couple spots above you can refuse a challenge. You are somewhat obligated to accept challenges from those near your ranking on the ladder. Are Maquiladora, Grandpa Troll and Keygen signing on to the ladder? That would boost our numbers a bit. Horned Frog--you gotta work on dancemasseuse to get him on here too. He'll tear this place up. How's that game between him and Birdman going?

Challenge #160 thehappies def. Cuaich updated. Congrats Happy Man! When did it end and how many turns?

Grandpa -- I don't think too many people use Vista here... at least I don't. How is your health? And what is "OP" for us "good folks"??

Frog -- I take it from Rickety that you are sandbaggin' I believe that is true seeing as how I'm currently playing you and you are very good.

Keygen -- Sorry, I forgot to mention your help with the ladder. Thanks! I'll take it from here if no one objects.

Maquila -- Hope you join our humble group!

Thehappies explains the system very well. Please heed his notes if you have questions about how the CTP PBEM Ladder works.

So how about my suggestion of starting from 1-Jan-2006 to determine new rankings? Yes, no, maybe so?

My surgeries, all 4 have gotten me almost pain fre, thanks to God! I ended up with a metal plate, a bone graft and 11 screws in my left wrist, nothing left, everything was removed surgically due to being torn out in accident. Now the attorneys can settle on what I get, a mere pennance i assuree you.

    OP? Oh... duh
That's great to hear Gramps! I remember that you were in so much pain, I really felt bad for you. The surgeries worked!

I looked on the internet and found the following regarding Vista and CtP. Apparently there has been some success running CtP via a virtual machine running Windows 98 or XP. See below quote from CivFanatics forum:

Posted by Slinky360 July 2007 -- "Maybe everybody already knows this, but i will post for those who dont. I had trouble getting ctp to run on my vista system (kept crashing to desktop). After looking around on the net for options, i came across Virtual PC 2007. This is available free for download at microsoft and it lets you run other operating systems inside a window. You will need the original os cd. I installed win98. The program gives the guest os part of your hard drive to use. Once more, the guest os (win98 in my case) had no trouble using my sound card, graphics card, etc... In the past i have had lots of trouble setting up a dual boot os, only to find win98 could not use my hardware. Now ive installed ctp on the guest os (win98) and it runs no probs.

... Or, you could run the ctp executable in windows compatibility mode, set to windows xp. Works for me

Ladder overhauled based on completions since 1-Jan-2006. I made minor changes to rules 2, 3, 5, and 6 because of the new way players are added to the ladder, and the way challenges are made.

Maqiladora -- I think either Thehappies or Keygen has a copy of the quick start.

Thehappies or Keygen, could you attach the quickstart here please?

    5. You may challenge any player up to three slots above your current position. If the person challenged dodges the challenge continually with no good reason, then the one challenged may lose one or more positions on the ladder.
So does this mean I can only challenge the bottom 3? Or up to the bottom 3 deity players?

EDIT: Nevermind you changed rule 5

    So who wants a game?

I think that basing the ladder off games since 2006 is fine. I'll try sending an email to people that I've had good games with in the past and see if we can beef up activity on here. If all of us do that, we should be able to get at least a few people on board. And I'll take Maquiladora on if he dares! If you want to try out the PBEM mod, open it up and start a game and send me turn 0. Any conditions and any AI set up are fine. Or I can start the game if you want. My email is thehappies at yahoo.

Go ahead and set it up.

Any settings are fine by me, but quick-start mod preferred.

Do we use the duel-duel format as mentioned in the rules?

My email is maqpoly at gmail dotcom. Let me know all the settings, better get some practice in now.

I've never actually done the duel-duel thing, and I'm not sure I get what they are suggesting. But the quickstart mod negates much of the advantage/disadvantage of starting location. You start with 'super settlers' that can move (I think) 10 spaces and more units automatically appear when they found a city. Extra trade goods also appear directly under the city when you found your first city. Read the 'readme' file that goes with the mod because I think it outlines all the special conditions of those first settlers. You can gain a huge advantage for example if you can settle your capital city where there are two elephants (or two beavers, poppies, etc) because a third will automatically appear under the city when you settle it **as long as the city is also settled on the same terrain type that can support that trade good (i.e. you can't have a beaver appear on grassland). This will mean that you'll have 3 trade goods in your city radius--which is a huge boost to your science and gold. It took me a while to figure that one out! Anyway, I'll start the game, send you turn zero, and if you don't like your starting position we can always restart.

Turn 0 sent (from me--the happy chinese) to Maquiladora of the Mexicans! Two AI civs--I think they were vikings and . . . maybe Americans. We used the PBEM mod. As far as I'm concerned, nukes and wonders are on the table unless you'd rather not.

I also sent a little spam off to some of the old boys from the previous challenge ladder. We'll see if any of them respond. What about Vissario and Idestroy? I don't have their emails. But it looks like the were active recently.

A couple last updates, I beat ricketyclick in a game that ended a while back on turn 102 (posted on the previous ladder). So that should put rickety on the active list (and give me another in the win column). Also, dancemasseuse recently beat birdman, so that should put him on the active ladder too (and knock Birdman off of the #1 spot!).

Just one game then. Perhaps better this way anyway, since if I lose, I won't lose two games right away.

I'm not overly keen on wonders, but I figure others might want to use them, so I better just adapt now.

BTW the save you sent was just a CtP save named "CTP" with no file type, so I just added .csg to the end and it loaded fine by double-clicking, also played/auto-saved fine.
