It's all in the speedo.

Better title for an Olympics thread.
Really liking the coverage of NBC in the US so far, especially with Universal HD (showing what's on MSNBC SD) and USA HD showing all sorts of sports. Though I do wish they'd show completely different sports (beach volleyball on both channels, even if they are different genders, gets a bit dull).
In the pool:
On a late night, as Michael Phelps rested, his 4x100-meter freestyle relay team broke a world record in preliminaries, temporarily quieting doubters that this was the United States' least-dominant relay team that ultimately could be the group to trip up Phelps in his quest for eight gold medals in one Games.
Nathan Adrian, Cullen Jones, Ben Wildman-Tobriner and Matt Grevers clocked a time of 3:12.23, smashing a 2006 mark also set by the U.S. Grevers waved his finger in the air and celebrated with his teammates after he touched the wall, knowing that this group won't be intact for Monday's final.
Wow... without Phelps a WR was broken. It seems that world records are getting broken like mad. Could it be the new Speedo suit that has been referred to much?
Also US Men tied the Netherlands (unfortunately for the US, on a very late free kick goal by the Netherlands). They may still not get to the next round (have to tie or beat Nigeria if the Dutch beat Japan), but great result.
Currently (and its early), the medals are tied between China and the US at 8, but China's 8 has 6 Golds.

It's what I figured. I have a feeling a stunning number of pool records will fall this go around.

What a relay!
Amazing comeback!
They beat the world record by 4 seconds.

Two world records were broken in that relay race. The lead Aus guy broke the 100m freestyle record.

I wonder if France got the response they were looking for, perhaps smash means something different in freedom fries land?![]()
Did anyone have Ryan Dunn From Jackass FAME? He died in a fiery car crash speeding after being in a bar. And to think, everyone thought he would die doing something stupid-rah

That was a great race. And a good example of why you shouldn't talk smack.
Another great race was the women's 400 freestyle where Hoff was leading until the very end, but got tracked down and out-touched. Very similar finish to the men's relay. Sooooo close. 7/100s of a second.

The trick isn't to break some eggs to make an omelette, it's convincing the eggs to break themselves in order to aspire to omelettehood.

The Chinese men gymnastics squad was unreal. The difficulty of their routines was eye popping, especially the last of the three competitors on the pommel house. Ridiculous stuff!

They are totally on another level. Some amazing stuff. Made the other men's teams look like grade schoolers.

Not to do with the athletes, but I'm really impressed by the stroke of genius employed by the digitally enhanced fireworks, as well as the syncronized...lip sync on display.
Back to the athletes. Boxer Wallace may need to be put on suicide watch.

Yeah, and she was the team leader too.
Is it just me, or does anyone else doubt the age credentials of those Chinese gymnists? They look far younger than 15, which I guess if true makes their awesome performance more impressive.

No way that girl is old enough. But don't worry, a government issued birth certificate validated that she was old enough.
And for the American women's falls in the finals, I doubt it would have made any difference. They would have been beaten regardless in my opinion. SO since they got the silver anyway, it really didn't matter.

It sounds like sour grapes, so I'm not going there. But Bela Karolyi left no doubt that he's positive some of those girls are 13-14.

I heard someone this morning suggest that some of the girls had quoted a younger age (14) in an earlier competition (recently earlier, not two years ago earlier). No idea where they heard that, though.

While the grip about the unusually long wait before letting her mount the beam is valid, I doubt it caused us to lose the gold. She screwed up on the floor exercise as well and that would have lost it all by itself.
The age thing seems blatant to me, the only thing that keeps me from being certain is that I can't imagine China would be that stupid. Lying about the opening ceremony singer is one thing, risking the shame of forfieting medals is another.
If it is a falsehood it will come out eventually, even China can't keep things like that under wraps these days.

If it hasn't come out by now, it won't. They used governement documents to prove it.
I doubt the mother will be coming forward or any of her neighbors for that matter. (assuming they weren't all executed already to keep it quiet)![]()

They don't have to execute them. Just hide 'em in the crowd.
These girls are taken from their homes VERY young (like 3-5 y.o.) and basically raised by the government sports apparatus. I'm sure they can fully "document" anything they need or want.

Based on what the female announcer said of the deductions from the (two) falls (.8 each) and the (three) out of bounds deductions (.1 each), the American team would still have been behind by .475, so it's likely the Chinese team was going to win no matter what.Originally posted by Patroklos

Sure they can. No one in authority is going to call them on it and in any case no one is going to find any evidence strong enough to counter official government documents. The age thing seems blatant to me, the only thing that keeps me from being certain is that I can't imagine China would be that stupid. Cool news:

BEIJING -- Steeve Guenot, a railway worker with little government athletic subsidy, has won France's first Olympic wrestling gold medal in 84 years by taking the Greco-Roman 66-kilogram weight class.
Guenot, whose brother Christophe won bronze at 74 kg, defeated Kanatbek Begaliev 3-0, 3-1. Begaliev was trying for Kyrgyzstan's first Olympic gold medal.
France hadn't won a wrestling gold since Henri Deglane took the 82 kg class in the 1924 Paris Olympics.
Winning the bronzes were Ukraine's Armen Vardanyan and Mikhail Siamionau of Belarus.
The field became wide open when Farid Mansurov, the 2004 Olympic champion from Azerbaijan, lost 3-0, 3-0 to Vardanyan in the first round. Mansurov didn't lose a period while winning last year's world championship.
In the 74 kg class, Manuchar Kvirkelia turned two strong moves into a two-period victory over China's Chang Yongxiang, giving Georgia its first Olympic wrestling gold medal.
Kvirkelia's decisive 6-0, 3-0 victory Wednesday came in the same week Russian troops stormed through Georgia. The gold also was the country's first in Beijing.
Kvirkelia used a 5-point throw to prematurely end the first period. Any period ends when a wrestler takes a 6-0 lead.
He added a 2-point throw on a gut wrench in the second to clearly frustrate Chang, who settled for silver.
The bronze medalists were Christophe Guenot and 2007 world champion Yavor Yanakiev of Bulgaria.

Anyone else endure that turgid game between Italy and Camaroon yesterday?
EDIT - In football that is, although the game I mentioned hardly qualifies as 'football' beyond kicking the ball around.

Okay, someone explain synchronized diving to me. Seriously, how the **** did this end up in the Olympics?
