The surgeons on board made a valiant attempt to reattach the severed body parts to the two gladiators. Anesthesia are banned during the tournament to reduce accidental deaths. Naturally, the two gladiators drunk themselves into a stupor and then let the doctors have at it.

They sewed Spacius' ears back on first, but it appeared they were too late. The flesh turned pitch black and gave out a repugnant odor, but the surgeons decided to leave them on until after the current match was complete, assuming Spacius survived.

They were far more successful with Theben's hand. It was cut clean off and posed no great difficulty to reattach. It was a sickly color and was completely paralized, but at least the flesh was still alive.

When the next round started the day after the surgery, both gladiators had nasty hangovers and stumbled into the ring with great reluctance.

Theben vs. Spacius Maximus

The gladiators looked at each other only briefly, and then they both stared at the ground. Spacius looked dreadfully sick and Theben's reattached hand was shaking violently. Slowly, they made there way around the edge of the ring, keeping a safe distance from each other. Neither made any aggressive moves in the first ten minutes.(1,2:Miss!)(1,2:Miss!) It was raining quite hard, and the audience was growing restless. The crack of thunder was heard directly overhead, and brought both fighters out of their stupor. They charged at each: Theben hit Spacius with his sword right under Spacius rib cage,(3:Hit!(17) and Spacius hit in Theben on his left calf muscle, which wasn't protected by any armor.(3:Hit!(11) After wailing a bit, both gladiators left the arena and went back to bed.

Both gladiators were in high spirits the next day. Spacius' ears had fallen off during the night he he was feeling much better. Theben had regained enough control over his recently severed and reattached hand to hold onto his shield again.(He had it tied to his wrist in round 4). Both were confident that they could win the fight today. They would have to content with Hurricane Adolf, though, who was now causing 100mph gusts and giving up 3 inches worth of rain an hour.

Theben vs. Spacius Maximus

Theben knew Spacius was in poorer health than he appeared, and figured one good blow would finish him off. To that end, he attacked first aiming for his spleen. Spacius guessed Theben's intentions and hid behind his shield. Theben's sword bounced harmlessly off its surface. (1:Miss!) Theben backed off to the other side of the ring, and Spacius did to pursue him.(1:Miss!) Theben suspected that Spacius was planning some audacious attack, and didn't dare approach. Instead, he picked up a bottle and threw it at Spacius' head, and by some miracle it hit!(2:Hit!(6)) Spacius was unfazed but angry; he tossed his shield like a frisby at Theben's head, forcing Theben to jump to the left. This was just a distraction, for Spacius then ran towards Theben while the shield was still in the air and was upon him when it hit the ground. Theben brought up his own shield only just in time. With a mighty swing, Spacius shattered the shield Theben was holding and knocked him to the ground, breaking his own sword in the process. But Theben was unharmed, his shield having absorbed the brunt of the blow.(2:Miss!) He stood up quickly and saw that his opponent was unarmed and unprotected. Theben jabbed his sword deep into Spacius' gut. Spacius groaned and fell to the ground dead.(3:Hit!(17))

Theben moves onto the final vs. The Doctor.

Only one left to finish off. If you care, Doctor, I'll allow you to concede. It'll be less painful for you.

It was better that I lost since I'll be on vacation soon and not be touching a computer for 10 days.

I sort of lost interest and was just turning in the same orders, just switching slots.

Sorry for the delay - got caught up with the Ryder Cup over the weekend, then have been stupidly busy this week.

Will get to it asap. Obviously I need some time to properly get into my opponent's head. I took a quick peek on Sunday but it isn't a very nice place so didn't stay there long enough.

BTW this is actually part of Doc's strategy. He lulls you into a boredom so complete, that you actually kill yourself.

The great derrick, which towered hundreds of feet above the base of the platform, was swaying precariously. The anemometer was destroyed by the wind, and all communications with the outside world was broken. There was no way to know the strength of the storm or how long it was to last.

There was talk of delaying the final match until after the storm had passed. However, as the weather worsened, there were serious doubts about whether they would even survive the storm. It was agreed that the match would go on.

Theben and the Doctor were eager to fight. A rivalry of sorts had developed between them after The Doctor's narrow loss to Theben in the Round Robbin. It was further aggravated by one of The Doctor's more peculiar habits: The Doctor strutted around naked the day before he was to fight in a match. This didn't seem to bother the Roustabouts, but for whatever reason it infuriated Theben. And since the fights took place daily, they were often naked and angry.

Theben vs. The Doctor

They both entered the ring fully clothed. They were alone, everyone was watching the match safely below deck. The Doctor wasn't particularly fond of Hurricanes, and had plans to end the competition quickly. He was the first to attack: he approached Theben from his right and attempted to strike him on the left arm. But Theben was too fast, and nimbly moved out of the way.(1:Miss!) The Doctor had not expected to miss and was thrown off balance! Theben struck The Doctor across the back and ripped out a chunk of flesh with his sword.(1:Hit!(9)) The Doctor quickly regained his balance, and tried to hit Theben again. But Theben blocked The Doctor's rapier with his shield,(2:Miss!) and slashed The Doctor's outstretched arm! (2:Hit!(9)) The Doctor yelped in pain and surprise and retreated to the other side of the ring to compose himself. Eventually, The Doctor decided to try his first attack again, except to the left side this time. His approach was more cautious this time, hoping to lull Theben into coma. Then with a sudden burst of speed, he charged to Theben's left side. But when he got near enough to strike, Theben stepped forward and smacked him in the face with his shield!(3:Miss!)(3:Hit!(9)) The Doctor stumbled backwards, stunned. His nose was broken, his arm cut, and his back mauled, and he had failed to even touch his opponent with his sword! Round 1 of the Final was over.

Wow, nice... seems like Theben perfectly countered Doc's orders. Impressive. But still a long way to go...
