Oh, I rather play the old Pirates on my C64-emu these days than Col. When it comes to RRT, i tend to go with ´III´ these days - it just lacks good scenarios so badly and i cant even find any good ones on the net...
No, never played it originally
No, never played it originally but I will (or already have) try it while waiting for Civ4: Col
Yes, I used to play it but don't anymore
Yes, I used to play it and have/will pick it up again while waiting for Civ4: Col
Yes, I'm still playing it today, even before I heard about Civ4: Col
I only ever played the special Banana edition -- oh, how overpowered those banana plantations were...

I played the original Colonization back in the day, but stopped doing so years ago. I picked it up again shortly after this remake was announced (albeit now the Windows version for easy multi-tasking) and I have to say I'm having a blast with it, it really holds up well![]()
And that's something that in my experience you can't nearly always say of these old games (I tried the old Pirates and Railroads when their remakes were announced but just couldn't get into them anymore).
So what about you guys?

Love it more than Civ.![]()

Never played the original: I was up to my kneck in diapers and midnight feedings during that timeframe (2 kids in 15 months). Last game I played was Star Legions in '93, and then I picked up gaming again with Deadlock in '96.

And if Dale DOES choose self exile, then 'poly just lost another one of their star gaming contributors, and that's a pity, since this is still a gaming site.

Only a couple of times - a mate had it.
Looking forward to the new version.

I don't know why he saved my life. Maybe in those last moments he loved life more than he ever had before. Not just his life - anybody's life, my life. All he'd wanted were the same answers the rest of us want. Where did I come from? Where am I going? How long have I got? All I could do was sit there and watch him die.
I have been playing it on and off for 14 years now.
«Vive le Québec libre» - Charles de Gaulle

I still play it...or rather I play FreeCol which is near enough the same.
Love the game, though it has a distinctly "old" feeling to it. Í am very much looking forward to the new version

I played it throughout the 90s and loved it. After several moves I can't find my copy anymore, though.

I played it from the CD version, although possibly not when it first came out, because I think that would have made me seven at the time!
I still play and actually found out about the new version by complete accident, hence I found this place, trying to find information about it!
Those who should have power do not want it, and those who seek power should not have it - Plato

I played it in the 90's. No longer have floppy drive and haven't seen the discs in years.
Now playing FreeCol and it is about how I remember the game... Probably wouldn't have played it again if the new version wasn't coming out.
Good concept - I just hope there is breadth to the game like in Civ4 series, that keeps you hooked for a year or two... there is only so many ways to master the conquest of a new nation with 4 leaders.... or so, it would seem.
Very much looking forward to it and from what I have seen, it will be great.

I voted Yes, but don't anymore.
I have a previous version of FreeCol, but didn't play much. I may update and play more, but that would cut into my SMAC time.![]()

BTW, did any of you guys use a hex-editor to play multiplayer-games ? Those lastet forever, since the ´unofficial´ players would get no reports (like ´building finished in colony X´, ´Ship arrives in Europe´ and so on), thus they were forced to check every couple of turns. Or maybe i didnt edit right... Anyways, just to be able to MP when it was not in the game really kicked ass...
No ... I was in my SP (translate to: I didn't know anyone else to play with) phase during Col

Thinking about it, i have a hard time trying to understand, why MP wasnt in the game officially back then... Anyone any ideas ?

A lot of games back then didn't really have MP. Remember. Civ only got MP with the MP Gold edition.

Well, but in Col, in order to play MP (hotseat of course), all you have to do is change a byte for each player in a save game.

Play regularly (SP).
This is the first game I get working when I get a new computer......
An old friend is often better than a new pretty face.

But an old friend with a pretty face (and better AI, better modding facilities, and an overhaul) is better than an old friend with an ugly face.
And welcome to Poly.

Of course I played the original...and I will play the sequel...
Still having the original box stored (bought 1994) just 1,5 meter away from my computer...
Played it last year from beginning to the end.
And after CIV4:Colonization was announced, I played it again.
And then I remembered, that I have a CD with different tools on it...maybe someone is interested in "Colcheat.exe".
It's possible to change every colonist to your prefered profession...Funny to build a colony with only experienced people. (just for testing...)

Awesome find! Might have to have a play around with this one.

I am playing Colonization right now. The discussions here have put me in the mood to start this game, but I have played two or three games each year since my last heavy Colonization phase in 2001 (I think).
Playing Colonization always reminds me of how much micromanagement I can take as long as it is relevant for the goal. The prospect of having to fight the redcoats (or whitecoats?) in the endgame keeps me motivated to get my colony in top shape.
It is also impressive how much the designers succeeded in encouraging colony specialization. The last-minute decision to scrap the radius expansion is an important factor, but the entire economic system leads you there. It is unfortunate that trade automation - which is quite decent by design - is ruined by bugs. (In my DOS version, editing trade routes almost always causes a crash.)
I really look forward to Colonization II ... after the recent reports I consider it safe to use that term in spite of what the marketing gurus might think. However, if my hardware - which is well above minimum, but below recommended requirements for Civ4 - prevents me from playing Col2 after release, it's good to know that after all these years I can still enjoy the original.

I played the Dos original, and over the last year have played a bit of freecol.
I'd love to play a version where the automated trade routes work.![]()

Yep, I sure did, I think I fired a game up about 2 or 3 months ago.

PC Gamer CD version July 08 has the full game for download. I still have the original CD version on my shelf behind me.

CD? Pleb.
I still got the disks here.![]()

The date on the CD is 1994. I had the 3.5 disk and in 92 I brought a 486 with a CD drive, so when the CD version came out I got it. I'm not sure where my 3.5 disk are now.Originally posted by Dale

Nope, never played it. I tried, but after ~15 turns then game always crashed on my Amiga
I tried playing it again a few years ago, but realized it's very difficult to get into an old game that you've never played before
